Here's a package I've been offered for $99/month:
Your Cobalt RaQ 2 Dedicated Server Configuration
Chassis: Cobalt Networks RaQ 2 w/ 250MHz MIPS Processor
RAM: 32 Megabytes
Hard Drive: Western Digital 8.4GB EIDE Hard Drive
Bandwidth: 20 GB/Month
IP Addresses: 8 IP Addresses
After 3 months I get the box. Is it worth it? Can this handle one website? Will it choke and die?
Thanks!

Welcome to the forums, skidder.
What do you pay after the first 3 months?

*ouch* I wouldn't want to burn my fingers on 32MBs of RAM. By the way, welcome to the Forums :)

After 3 months we keep it... I'm not sure what the continuing fees are.
My question is: for one website with static pages, what kind of load can this handle?

Heya Scott! Welcome to the forums.
Personally, I wouldn't take the deal. I think you could something beter to spend $100 each month. Like me! :D
P.S. Is this the same Scott I know? :)

Hi,
It will be slow. 32 MB of RAM is not enough, even for one website. I have a server which has 64 MB of RAM. I'm running apache, name server and mail server. Pushing about 10 GB of bandwidth per month, 64 MB is not even enough.
Also these 250 mhz MIPS seems weak. Don't expect much from it.
May be this box will be enough for your needs. But, hey, if you have only static pages and one website, what's the advantage to have your own dedicated server? Especially a server from which you really can't expect to host a site doing more than 15-20 GB/month.
Also, I'd be scared to own a server like this. In my opinion if they give it to you after 3 months, it may be because they have to much problems with them. If it is yours you will have to repair it / pay the tech + hardware...

Agreed, lease a better one for $99/mo if you like. Although there's probably nothing wrong with the machine, it is dated enough that (to me) it just isn't worth it, overall.
