View Full Version : Searching for Web Host With Specifics

I've been looking for DAYS for a new web host. I loved the one I currently use until they changed servers (supposedly, it was to be a better one, but not on my end. I'm still having some problems, and what really ticked me off was that they changed the web control panel from MonsterControls (I *LOVE* MonsterControls!) to that Cobalt Raq thing. I avoided that when I'd previously searched for a new host, only a few months ago!!!

Here's what I need from a host:

* Must offer at least 300MB for under $30
* Must NOT offer unlimited space or traffic
* Must allow me to use the space for commercial purposes
* Must allow adult content (I don't want censorship, barring things illegal, so I'm free to say what I like, including cursing, sexual language, etc.--I write adult fan fiction and want to post it on my site, for example--and I want the option to put up an adult site later if I choose)
* Prefer MonsterControls web control panel, but I'm flexible, if the software is good, like CPanel
* Must NOT use the Cobalt Raq web control panel
* Prefer unlimited POP email accounts, but at least 25
* Must have unlimited email aliasing and forwarding
* Must include FTP
* Prefer to have Telnet access
* Must allow me to put up my own CGI scripts
* Must include latest version of Perl
* Prefer to have many features, like databases, Real server, shopping cart, etc.--I may not use them now, but I'd like it if I had the option; HOWEVER, a personal site that I can use for commercial purposes is just fine, and I do not require an e-commerce site
* Must have a free trial period or money-back guarantee
* Must have access to raw log files
* Must have web statistics
* Must allow password-protected directories
* Must have domain name registration for under $25

I think that's it. If anyone can help me out, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
* Prefer to have domain name parking, preferably free

Jennifer,

I think if you posted this in the Advertising/ Offers section. You will get some good offers ;)

I find it best to register domain names outside of your host incase you have to leave. Check out www.stargateinc.com for CHEAP good domains!! They offer everything you need.

Also, www.aletiahosting.com is a good host, I don't know 'bout their content rules though....

First, thanks AnIdiot, I'll take your advice. :)

Next, Dogma: I didn't know you could do that! I asked a previous host if I could register a domain through a company I would choose, and they said I had to do it through them!

You can register your domain through any registrar. They said you could only do it through them so they would get the $$$ of the registration ;)

Not all hosts register domains under their names. It's always best to find out your host's policies on registering domains (or your host-to-be, as the case may be). :) Sometimes hosts will register domains for free, too. Just find out if you ultimately own the domain or not.

Yeah, I once tried to register a domain with a registrar that only offered cheap bad domains. It was no good. I could only get names like www.amazont.com and www.yahooou.com, but now that I'm using Stargate, I get access to register the good names ;)

(tee-hee-hee! Just funnin Dogma)
