If I bought a domain name could I host my own site?

Do you know and know how to install and use web server software, including how to keep your server secure from hack attacks? Do you have a constant connection to the Internet?

f so, then you may not need a web host.

For server software, you can use Foxserv (http://www.foxserv.net/) for hosting yourself at home. With an adequate Internet connection (ADSL, DSL, Cable), it's not bad.

But like living_media said, it's more about server security that you need to learn more. :)

In general is it best just to get a shared hosting account to host your domain. You will then not have to worry about security, uptime, software upgrades and so one. Small shared hosting accounts are not that expensive so depending on your budget and needs will you be able to get a low cost easy to handle solution instead of running everything your self from your home computer.
