If this is your only concern it is probably better to by two servers (Standard Pack) than overload one Raid 5. ------------------ Angela Charity Webspace (division of WebAuthorities) http://www.charitywebspace.com MarkW78 08-27-2000, 02:46 AM Luke, I agree with Stephanie that it all depends upon what kind of performance is good enough for you and your clients. But, I recently got an email from Ron at Alabanza. In one part of it, it states that the RAID 5 package includes "Up to 1000 Control Panels (recommended limit)" Just so you know, the Standard Pack comes with 500 Control Panels, but more are available. Hope this helps! Mark Learner 08-28-2000, 06:20 PM Originally posted by MarkW78 ...the Standard Pack comes with 500 Control Panels, but more are available. Are these additional Control Panels available FREE of cost on demand? Learner Chicken 08-28-2000, 07:40 PM I believe there is a charge per CP. Learner 08-28-2000, 07:44 PM Does anyone know what these charges are ? Learner MarkW78 08-28-2000, 07:56 PM Learner, Extra control panels cost $1.00 each for those over 500. Mark Learner 08-28-2000, 07:59 PM Thanks !!! This is a one-time setup charge, right ???!!! Learner MarkW78 08-28-2000, 08:07 PM Originally posted by Learner ...This is a one-time setup charge, right ???!!! Sorry, I thought I had put that in... The charge is monthly. Extra Control Panels for the Standard Plan are $1.00 per CP, per month. This is for those after the included 500. Sorry about that!!! Jag 08-29-2000, 06:08 AM I strongly disagree here. They claim you can put 1000 site to a box, ya right. With maybe 4gig of ram, and quad processors. If you put even 500 on one box you WILL have problems. It ones takes one site running all by its lonesome to crash a machine sometimes with server loads. So when you have 500 to watch for, and you will be watching hard with that many, then you will never get away from troubles. With that many sites you will also have an enourmous amount of users (pop & ftp) and thats just more load on the machine still. Now lets say that somehow you were able to keep the machine up, how much traffic do you think 500 sites will pull. Im betting on about 10 times at least of the allotted 50gig a month by Alabanza. All this together with Alabanzas high bandwidth fees just equals failure. When your 500 clients crammed on a machine for 1000 (ya right) see the ungodly sluggishness of their sites they will be unhappy. Bottom line is Alabanza may be generous in offering that many CP's with a machine but in no way can it SAFELY handle it. Just my two cents :) Chicken1 08-29-2000, 08:10 PM Well by that same token, a server with two sites on it could be in trouble. Yep, all it takes is one site to do the damage. I don't think an extra 100 has any effect other than slightly increase the odds of getting "that one site" :) Jag 08-29-2000, 08:45 PM Well not only do you increase your chances to get that one bad site but running 500 sites on one server and let them have only 1 gig( which is the worst traffic allotment and you probably couldnt get anyone to buy off on that) but let say you did and you had 500 sites using 1 gig each thats 500gig mo. Now take out the 50 your allowed and multiply 450 x $8/gig . Ouch to say the least. You loose big becuase you cant be chargging a user much for a measly 1 gig of transfers. At least allow 4 or 5 gig and now do the math. I dont even want to think about it, and for the sake of all the clients out there I hope no host thinks of cramming 500 sites to a machine either. Annette 08-29-2000, 09:00 PM That assumes that every account will reach the absolute max on traffic allowed - the odds say it just won't happen. 500 is not some magical number - it's just a baseline of sorts. Anyone who takes it as a hard and fast rule, without bothering to check resource usage, is simply asking for trouble. angela 08-29-2000, 10:54 PM I agree that the odds are that all sites don't use their full allotment but if enough do, those 50gigs go fast! It really only takes a few sites. Chicken1 08-30-2000, 09:03 AM You could fit 1000 sites like the ones I have on that 'banza server and never have to worry about resources nor bandwidth. It all depends. Jag 08-30-2000, 03:19 PM they must be plain text, no scripts, and each move under a few hundred mb of traffic. |
