View Full Version : Geotrust Certificates, Grr.

I purchased a geotrust certificate yesterday from rackshack. It's a very weird process. Although unlike some (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=148065), I was successful, it's just a lot of steps.

They should have an outline of how the process is going to work first, or maybe number the steps. Like, (step 5 of 10). What you do first, is basically purchase a token from Rackshack. When doing this, you enter your admin contact, tech contact, your billing information, and your CSR.

They email you a link to a session (your token). You take this token and give it to geotrust, proving that you've paid? Then you have to enter some of the information in again and approve the rest. As well as providing additional information.

Then there's like three emails that you have to confirm, an automated telephone call that you have to accept (which was new for me), and could have been troublesome for some. As they didn't initially say that you'd need a phone to complete the process.

It definitely wasn't as straight forward as the three steps Rackshack has on their site.

Anyway, that's all fine. I was able to figure out the 10 steps, I just didn't expect it to go on and on and on like that. I kept wondering if I'd ever be done. :uhh:

My biggest problem is that my CSR said:

C=US
ST=Michigan
L=Ann Arbor
O=Bitserve Systems
OU=Security Division
CN=www.bitserve.net

But the certificate that they singed says this:

CN = www.bitserve.net
OU = Domain Control Validated
OU = See www.geotrust.com/quickssl/cps (c)03
OU = Business Registration: https://services.choicepoint.net/get.jsp?1848403531
O = www.bitserve.net
C = US

Why don't they just use the information that I gave them? Why do they have to go and modify stuff? Where did they say that they would do that? They even asked me to verify the subject of my CSR. And it was correct. Why ask me to verify it, if they're going to change it?

What's this choicepoint crap?

Grr. :mad:

That's it. That's my rant. I'm done now.

I had to buy two to get one to work.
Support just dancing me around.
Today I bought :
http://geotrust.com/true_site/index.htm
Does Not Look Like and does not act like the product geotrust shows.
Cost for that was $119.00.
Still waiting a reply from Geotrust.

Bitserve, look at this:
Dear Customer,
You can't renew the certificate you need to order a new one, at the moment the price is $42.22 but prices are subject to change.

I almost purchased it, but then got this answer from Rackshack. Does it mean that you will have to purchase each one every year? And going through whole process again, generating CSR, filling forms...

Do you have any info about this?

Thank you.

00000, I also had a geotrust certificate from geotrust last year. But instead of paying their renewel fee, I thought that I'd just go to Rackshack to have a new one generated, as it would be cheaper.

Once I got to Geotrust's site, they actually recognized the CSR as being for a certificate that they had already signed. So they considered it as a renewal. And I got an extra month. 13 months for the price of 12 at the $39 rate.

So you'll probably need to always go to Rackshack's site and just purchase a new one (because Rackshack's API doesn't support renewals), meaning you will need to upload your CSR every time, but as far as Geotrust is concerned, it is a renewal, if the CSR matches a certificate that they've already issued.

Our certificate from last year wasn't as badly modified as this year. From last year:

C=US
ST=Michigan
L=Ann Arbor
O=www.bitserve.net
OU=See www.geotrust.com/quickssl/cps (c)02
OU=Domain Control Validated - Organization Not Validated, CN=www.bitserve.net

Yep, I got the extra 3 months also going through rackshack.
Already had a Geotrust and wanted to save some money.
Then I had a problem with the truesite ID.
Geotrust gave me an upgrade and came through with flying colors again.
Rackshack is going to refund my money back for the one that would not work.
All and all, I am now a very happy camper!
