I think that Nac has the right to maintain a high level of quality and technology. If for some reason PW or whatever goes down to upgrade, it really isnt a big deal.

All companies upgrades.

We have upgrades, we try to do them on the slowest time, but it is vital to upgrade for tommorow.

I dont think a few minutes of downtime should be questioned. Overall there isnt a datacenter out there that at some point wont upgrade to better serve its customers.

Respect the fact that in the long run, the few minutes of downtime, will = greater sucess for its customers down the road.

Joe,

I agree that upgrading and staying current is important but there should be no reason that NAC ever has to intentionally has to go off-line.

If you are running a fully redundant data center then you should have 2 gateway routers running HSRP, VRRP or some other sort of redundant protocol, you should also have at least 2 layer 2/3 switches running BGP, or OSPF distributing traffic throughout the DC. You should also never perform maintenance or upgrade these 4-5 boxes at the same time. Upgrade one, make sure nothing blows up, then upgrade the second, and so on.

The only area where you might have a scheduled outage is on the customer hand-off switch, which would not be fully redundant.

Of course that does not mean that you will not occassionally have outages, no one can provide 100% uptime, but you should not have to have full data center scheduled outages.

uullan, you are so correct!

A properly set-up datacenter should never have to go offline for anything.

uuallan, I couldn't agree more. But the nature of the upgrade/maintenance wasn't mentioned. Don't forget you sometimes need to get into the server to install memory, a drive, replace a NIC or even the whole box. These things cost a little downtime no matter what your connectivity is.

He's talking about downtime throughout the datacenter. I think you're talking about a single machine. There's a big difference.

Actually,

Im just getting sick of the posts ie Company XYZ is down for a few minutes.

I mean it could be a simple reboot, that took it offline for a few seconds.

Granted a datacenter going down well, youve explained, but its just annoying when you see that same post about a solid company, who is probably aware of the situation....

Exactly :).

Yes, this outage for which I was a customer down for over 25 minutes...
I am co-located and was actually working on the system right when the outage started. The outage was NOT my server, it was the data center's connection to the internet. I tried to connect infrom both Seattle and Phoenix, no good.

Such planned outages should be very rare, and at minimum notice given to customers at least 3 (business) days in advance.

Look, mistakes happen, but the purpose of this forum is to share what has really happened, not just what is supposed to happen. ;)

Well the thing is if they don't notify you, you don't know if the whole NOC blew up or if your servers died :D

I'm painfully aware of the difference :)

The original post was rather vague and could be taken from more than one perspective. There are many, many posts made wherein someone says "xxx is down" when in fact that's not what they mean or it is simply not the case. Blanket statements will elicit a broad range of responses.

Just wanted to point that out. But let's not bog down the thread. . .
