View Full Version : Warning about stupid instructions regarding spam

For those of you who report spam to the host and read the automated responses most send, be aware that the instructions some of them include in that response are stupid and almost guaranteed to have you receive more spam.

I received a spam earlier today from a British server, lineone,co.uk Their automated response included the following:
"If you are concerned that you appear to have been subscribed to an unsolicated mailing list please attempt to unsubscribe by following any instructions included"

Here is my reply to them:

Your instructions state "If you are concerned that you appear to have been subscribed to an unsolicated mailing list please attempt to unsubscribe by following any instructions included"

Do you not realize how stupid and uninformed that recommendation is?

It goes against recommendations from virtually any anti-spam site. The reason is simple, it confirms a working e-mail address and is virtually guaranteed to get you more spam.

I suggest you delete that from your automated instructions.

See sites like CAUCE (http://www.cauce.org) and links on it if you wish to learn more about spam and how to fight it.

You almost never reply to a spammer (unless by anonymous e-mail). In many cases, they ralay through the servers of others so the bounced e-mails donlt even come back to them,. When you reply, it lets them know that you have a valid address and you will get more spam, not less, by replying to their phony Remove From Mailing List solicitation.

If a host tells you reply to those lists, ignore them. they either are clueless about the problem, stupid, are spammers themselves or are in league with spammers.

Remember Rule number 1, Spammers lie.

Very true that you will get more Spam if you will try to get removed by replying them. Not sure about the phony thing... isn't it funny that somehow they got your email address and start sending Spam. When you will read the removal instruction you will find the following:

"The only way to unsubscribe from this list is by calling us at xxxxxxxxx." These ar52holes found your email address and now you have to give them a call.

I found that using spamcop.net helped a bit to reduce the number of Spam.

Most of the safe lists are not SAFE enough.

Make sure that when you are going to subscribe to a list, do not subscribe using your daily or personal email address.

One of the methods is to use a new free email account such as from yahoo.com or hotmail.com. In this case, if you receive an offer in your personal email account... you can report SPAM to the spammer's ISP. Another good thing about using a new free email account is you can delete the account or simply don't care.

Tina, how can you get $6,000 if you spend only $6?

Just my thoughts :D

I really hope you knew that I was joking. I thought everyone had rec'd that spam at least once.

"Make $6000 from only $6!!!"

Supposedly, you send in $1 to 6 people on the list...and somehow, magically, you end up with $6000 someday.

when I used to fight spam, to make me feel better, when I traced the company's real email address down, I added their email addresses to spam sites and crappy mailing lists of other spammers.

childish I know, but revenge is *FUN*
