Earlier today, i was on a message board, and the administrators banned my favorite curse word "jackass" . I got in a big argument with the board administrator, and he ended up ignoring me.

What is yoru opinion of message boards, and word censors?

I believe they should only censor the words that are censored on television, or not censor anything at all.

I believe they should censor any word 'they' find offensive.

It's their board, they have the right to censor what they see fit. Think of it like you're home, if you don't like your guests saying/doing something... you can ask them to stop, and if they don't, you ask them / make them leave.

That isn't to say the board admin should discriminate between users or play favorites (although they can if they wish).

Well it is their board, so they make the decisions... not that I agree with them, but it's not my place to decide.

Why do you have to use curse words anyway? No need for it. You are lucky the admin didn't ban you after your argument. So with censoring a word, you got off lightly.

Depending on the board, censorship may be a good thing or a bad thing. It is up to the owner to determine what they think should be censored.

I personally only censor one word on my site, and only because I hate the damn word and I find it really offensive.

Thats just me though.

It's not really a curse word, i could call someone a donkey, and it would have the same meaning. I curse in a joking fasion, everybody laughs when I call someone a jackass, i was just trying to lighten up the place.

but yeah, i agree, it should be in teh administrator's best interest words which can hold leude meanings.

to get people's feedback on whether they think it is necessary to censor words.

I don't know if you know this, but I own a message board, and i want to take feedback from the public as to what they dislike message boards to do.

i was arguing with him, because it appeared that he was censoring my word out of spite, because of some other things that have happend in recent weeks.

Yes, but technically f*** isn't a curse word either, then, as long as it's being used in the context that two people are having sex. As a matter of fact, that particular word has more than one meaning, the others which are not offensive in the least bit. So should they uncensor it from here?

How about the word b****? A female dog. How about "fag" (sorry, I didn't figure everyone would get it if I starred it out)? The real meaning of that word has nothing to do with sexual orientation. Lots of different meanings for these words, but the fact of the matter is that somehow each of them turned to slang and have been branded as offensive, so even though it's real definition is not indeed something bad, if the administrator finds a particular word offensive, just let it go.

Including the person you call a jackass? I don't find the word funny, and I certainly would not laugh if you referred to someone else as a jackass. So, not everyone laughs when you call someone a jackass.

honestly I think these are the only words should be banned

Fu*k
Sh*t
Cl*t
Cu*t
Motherfu*ker
CockSu*ker
and a few more

Just the offensive ones also ****** and Fag because it can be considered Sexual Harrasment. Although I think the best word is Dip**** :p

What you believe is only relevant at your site, your board. What they believe is more relevant at their board. I'm not sure what 'television' has to do with it, but never live your life by what television does or is. ;)

each of the peopel who are on that message board know me in real life, they have all met me, and spent numerous hours of time with me in real life. They know that in real life, i call them jackasses, and the tone at which I usually say it sounds very anti-social,a dn very funny at the same time.

"each of the peopel who are on that message board" != everyone

What you believe is funny and should be allowed to be said on your messageboard is up to you. Personally, if I saw one member refer to another member as a jackass I would remove the post and warn the user.

I agree allan but not if you knew for a fact the 2 were friends and there just joking around with each other

You'd still remove it. Others would get the idea it was acceptable if you didn't.

well I mean for one if I owned a message board I wouldn't have censors on I would just make sure there wasn't like brawls going on :)

Exactly. It is their board and that is how they choose to run it.

Out in the real world, I do curse on occasion. But not very often and usually only with certain people. On boards like this, I find it totally inappropriate. I cringe when I read posts with curses. Some people will get by the censors by abbreviating (WTF for example) and it never fails to take away from the point they were trying to make. Do you really need to curse to get your point across? Frankly, if you do your point probably wasn't strong enough in the first place.

Also, keep in mind when dealing with other people you have to move beyond your own judgment about what is offensive. Other people's views on what is offensive are valid and you must respect them.

Personally I think all cuss words should be censored. Since this is the internet and everyone is not who they say they are, there could be children lurking. They hear enough of that stuff in the real world I don't think they need to see it in message boards too. Thats just my opinion though so...

I agree Bonnie. They can cuss and swear to their heart's delight in the school yard, but not on a public forum. It isn't impressive and just leads to flaming and more cussing in most instances.

It's their forum, they can censor what they like.

Personally I couldn't care less if people want to use certain words, they are all in the dictionary there to be used just like any other word.

They can censor anything they life - there are certain forums who've starred out their rivals name, and to mention opponents is risking a ban. You should just be thankful WHT is more independent, allowing negative comments about RS etc. With regards to profanity, as long as you don't ban "Muppet!" I don't care :D

hehe... I don't think anyone gets your point. Same thing when headsurfer posted a sticky about RackShack (downtime or something). It bugged the hell out of me, but oh well because Robert owns the forum. That's life... if you don't like the censorship, start your own forum. That's how I see it.

Bonnie, I think in most cases it's the children here who are doing the cussing.
I agree with the censoring though. It keep the level of the board at a higher standard.

I frequent another messageboard and it's a user-controlled option. The board censors the words unless you disable censoring in your control panel.

censorship is lame... But what can you do? thank god it's only a message board.

Everyone curses every now and then, some more often. I rather see some curse words here and there, it's more real life. So many peeps here portray this angelic image... ::cough cough::...it's so fake it's sickening.

Well considering it's a forum for people in the hosting business I don't really think that too many are being fakes. Most professionals refrain from foul language in a public setting.
