View Full Version : Looking to start webhost on cobalt raq4...
LastActionHero 07-15-2001, 04:31 AM Hello everybody.
Me and my friend are looking at the cobalt raq 4 at 4swebspace.com to start a webhosting business. My friend already owns a webhosting business he is a reseller.
My question is what is involved in hosting on a cobalt raq 4 ? Is it a good server? What things do i need to know? What control panels come with the 4webspace.com offer?
Generally can tell me what i need to know about a cobalt raq 4 to run a successful business.
Thank you for your help.
LastActionHero 07-15-2001, 04:34 AM As you can see on the left I'm a complete Newbie , so please help me out:D
Thank you.
HostRat 07-15-2001, 06:16 AM Cobalts have everything you need to start.
I recommend that you purchase the RAQ (Brilliant for people starting out) and learn as you go.
This message board has so much infomation about cobalts and with some knowledge of telnet you should be ok! :) :)
Add me to your msn (******@hotmail.com) and i will help ya out :D
If your a complete newbie, a RAQ is the way to go. I suggest though, that you purchase a RAQ from a well known, 24/7 tech support, web host. The little companies, that are resellers, are not always the best. Sure, the prices are right, but the support is crappy. Now, if you were to go with a big guy (i.e. verio, rackspace, cobaltracks) then you would get the best services. These guys can help you out if anything does go wrong. Its not very good, if a server goes down at 6:30 pm and your little reseller left his office at 5:00 pm. You see what I mean?
Anyways, just a thought to throw out their.

LastActionHero 07-15-2001, 12:42 PM Hi thanks for the info but I was looking at 4webspace.com and rackspace.com
I have searched the forums and I have read every single post about the above hosts. They both seem good except for the dns problems at rackspace. But rackspace is good value for money.
What I want to know is which host I should go for and how much RAM is involved for a webhosting company?
The other things I have found out by searching the threads (as suggested by Chicken :) ).
edit: Do you think anything else needs to be installed (other than the security udpates) on a brand new raq from the above two companies?
ps: I'm looking at the dedicated servers.
web_res 07-15-2001, 03:06 PM Just so you guys know (Jim) 4webspace isn't very small :). There owned by the same company that runs the huge free webspace provider spaceports, the redirection service redirection.net, and tera-byte.com (which is not very small at all).
Yes, they have their own noc with multiple connections to major backbone providers.

I have a server at RackShack great connection speeds but there support is lacking but since there website is down for 6-8 hours a night and there night techs are not that experienced I would say go to 4webspace.com and get a raq ya pay a little more but will be worthit if ya need help
before I would pay more than $250 a month
I would get hooked up wiht a Managed service that has a control panel of some type (Cpanel, Plesk) every body will argue which is best so be ready for that
but a managed server will mena that you do not have to try to do stuff the people at the hosting co will do some of the work for you (for a fee usually)
for that you will ge a better cpu than is on a RaQ adn be a little better performer
this will also depend on what your people that are hosting with you are doing
remember a raq will bog down due to the cpu and hd etc.. compared with a higher end PIII and SCSI drives
so also read a lot of webistes and you will see most will cut peole off at certain cpu usage etc....
best of luck and I am sure you will find lots of info on this board
I know about 4webspace, just trying to throw acouple more companies out there. No harm intended.
Also, the CPANEL/PLESKE is a good idea. Many of the clients will truely like that, and support request will drop once a good control panel is installed.
Another thing is you should determind what your limit will on the sites hosted per server. If you determind that your gonna put 100 sites on the RAQ, then I suggest that you go with 128 MB of RAM, if you want to put 200 sites, go with 256 MB of RAM.
Also, DialtoneInternet is known for being a good RAQ host, you may want to check them out.
If you have any other questions, feel free to throw them out here!

LastActionHero 07-16-2001, 07:32 AM Hi ,
Thanks for the your replies. Honu when you say the website is down 6-8 hours every night do you mean downtime or lack of good support at that time. I assuming it's the second situtation.
I also think administering a rack is very easy once you have the right manuals/references besides you. Am I right?
About the contol panels, I think it is a good idea. How much does it cost and is their any licensing involved?
Unfortunately my friend (he's investing all the money) is on a tight budget now and that is why we are looking at rackshack.net's raq's very closely. So i think for the moment we will go with raqshack and move out to a dedicated linux box once we get more customers and begin to turn in some profits.
So what do you think?
Aloha
well the site is down for maintenance every night around midnight or so Texas time so the dns panel is not acccesible durring that time at least for me it is a hassle as that is around 8 pm HST
so if you add a lot of sites do your own dns I recomend that anyway with rackshack as they do not have a good track record of knowing what they are doing
I have had multiple tickets with spelling errors dns # errors one of which cancelled a raq I had with no warning ????
so be warned ;)
basically if you do your own dns on the raq you should never have to deal with them ;)
yeah raqs are very easy to run
LastActionHero 07-16-2001, 08:47 AM so is running a dns on your raq easy?
And I read in the other thread about their one time memory upgrade and bandwith upgrade offer to new customers. Now that would make it a killer deal don't you think.
Aloha
yeah try this link out
http://pkg.nl.cobalt.com/howto/
yeah 256 megs for cheap good deal adn they are upgrading the bandwith
but I am hoping they do not get anyworse with service issues
;)
LastActionHero 07-16-2001, 10:27 AM Thank you all I will let you people know when I start my webhost. :)
diyoha 07-16-2001, 08:35 PM they might get better with their service issues. The email that was sent out said their support staff is getting trained by a raq expert this month ... that cannot be bad.

microsol 07-18-2001, 06:11 AM Yes, they have their own noc with multiple connections to major backbone providers. [/B]
If they would have it their network never would be down, which is obvisiously NOT the case. Just search for tera-byte in these forums.
