I'm interested in purchasing my first domain and I was wondering if you guys get a lot of SPAM and junk mail from your WhoIs listings?

I'm only interested in purchasing one or two domains, so I'm wondering if you guys feel it's necessary to spend the extra $9 per year to get the GoDaddy private registration.

Thanx in advance for your feedback. Kevin.

I have about 6 names I check email on...and hardly get any junk mail from them. And all that I do get wouldnt be stopped by having the domain privately listed on godaddys thing.. The junk I get is just addressed like info@mydomain.com or webmaster@mydomain.com. I have a catch all so it picks up all of that. Also, if the domain was previously registered, there may be a lot of junk mail being sent to it because of that. :/ The previous owners email could have been put on a spaming list somewhere, I usually block all emails sent to that address if that's the case, as it has been with two domains.

What I don't understand is why I am constantly getting spammed to the name on the contact info when the domain was first registered. Yet, I changed the contact info about 5 months ago, and I have not received any spam address to my name.

Whats with this?

Yeah this domain was previously owned and just dropped finally even though it expired 2 months ago. I had already planned on making a catch-all for the more commonly spammed addresses like you said (webmaster@*InsertDomainHere*, etc.)

Anyone else? Comments/Suggestions?

You don't have to make a catch-all for those names, just don't set up an account or forwarder. Bouncing is sometimes a good thing ;) :D

Spam...arghhhh

I use this email just for contact (when registering domain) and nowhere else, and yes I do get few of them, but as lon as you setup nice filters, only 1 or 2 will slip trough.

I get hundreds per day. From about 3 domains. :) Previous owners loved their spam...

It all depends on the name. I have one domain with godaddy private registration. I have recieved 0 spams in the time I have had it. (3 months or so) I get a lot of this topsites.us bulls*it about my domains too. But that is just spam... its just a DMOZ mirror. how sad.

I have gotten spam and junk mail. I know the junk mailers got my name from the WHOIS because it was addressed to my initials instead of my whole name the same way I entered it when I registred. I now use my bothers PO box overseas and junk mailers don't send their crap overseas for whatever reason, I guess cost. I get spam but I use an email acct on the whois that I only check every now and then just to make sure I'm not getting any domain name related emails from godaddy. So bottom line you more then likely will get spam and junk mail it probably won't be that bad with only a couple domains but you will get hit.

SPAM is just a fact of (Internet) life, no one can stay out of it. If you don't get any spam, that simply means you do not exist! :D The bottom line is: NEVER buy from spamming products or services. Some people I know are silly enough to read the spam e-mail messages and THINK that these are serious offers. With some experience, you can tell from the subject line that they are spam so you can click delete.

Chicken is correct that catch-all e-mail configuration may not be the cleverest thing to do. You don't have a hundred aliases, do you? Just set up those few that you need.

Did I just say CHICKEN?? Nice to meet you here! :D
