If you're planning to integrate it with MySQL you could do worse than get a copy of "PHP & MySQL Development"... it's a big hefty book but it's got a lot of useful info in it and a reasonably step by step approach...

Oh but be warned, if picking apart examples are your main learning mode then this book may not be the best.
