From what I've seen these days if you go with the colo you better be damn sure you are going with a stable company or you could easily lose your investment.
I would personally recommend a ded. server from someone like RackShack or Dedicated Now. You don't have to lay out a lot of money, your chance of lost investment is minimal and you are not paying a lot more in the long run. Plus you can upgrade as they upgrade and not have to worry about outdated equipment.

you should check the "dedicated hosting" forum .

Get a dedicated server first. Find a good company with good tech support!

Get a dedicated server from RackShack, The Planet, or Dedicated now. You can always update and you won't lose as much if the company shuts down. Of course with the companies above, I do not think you will have to worry about that, but one never knows what might happen. It pays to be safe.

Best way to start is to get a dedicated server from eith RackShack, DedicatedNow or ThePlanet as stated in the previous posts. You have much less to lose.

I set up my own in a spare bedroom, that way I can monitor it 24/7 without running to the office if something happens. Plus its close if I ever need to swap some hardware or repair something.

At www.ezzi.net you can do both. They have a promotion where you can get a dedicated server, and after six months it's yours. You can then colo it there for the same price, or have it shipped to you. ezzi has a solid reputation, and it seems like a good deal. The only downside is they don't have as good of a selection as rackshack or some of the others, so you only have a couple of systems to pick from. But it's worth looking into.

That's great if you are hosting one or two low volume sites but if you want to host or have a serious site the architecture just isn't there in a home internet connection.

Home Server hmmm sounds sweet
basement a couple t1s

Hmmm but who has the big bucks for the t'1
The server you can get on ebay.

Well anyway dedicated it is, then slowly grow.
I liked the colo cause I would have physical access to the box,
instead of having a tech at some these places try to tell me what the problem is.

Well anyway Thank you all.

Actually, I have the whole room built into a server room. I house my dialup gear and servers in the room. One wall, I have my cornerstone on with my lines. I pay a lot for the setup, but I use the hosting as an extra income, I origionally started with dialup in mind but spread to hosting.

I host mainly small local sites.

so yes, home offices/server rooms can be done :D

What kind of lines do you have and what do you pay? If you don't mind me asking. I've thought about doing this for a while. For my own use, not for hosting.

I'm sorry,I just can't possibly see hosting real customers in your house.

Especially when you can get $1.95-$3.95 hosting in actual NOCs now days...what will you offer that seperates you from everyone else?

I have mucho bandwidth into my house, and I still wouldn't even consider hosting a production machine in my house, if not only for the quality of services, but what happen sthe first tmie you get a major DDoS and your providers terminate your service?

Not to mention for a home connection, let's say you are looking at $80 month or so for the connection, if you were to do this, being multihomed would be key, so get cable and dsl, you are up to $150 a month, which is $60 more a month than a dedicated server :)

It's just not feasible...nor fair to your customers in my eyes, if you can do it successfully, more power to you man.

Dedicated server seems to be the best option these days unless you have a specific need (e.g. a PCI card that you wouldn't typically find in a dedicated server).

~ Setup fee on a dedicated server is generally MUCH cheaper than a server of that quality would be to buy
~ Monthly fee on a dedicated server is roughly the same as on co-location
~ Your dedicated server provider should replace faulty hardware in a timely manner whereas your co-location provider will ship the box home on request or fit the new hardware (shipped to them by you) for a (usually huge) fee.
~ To many co-location providers are accidently dropping your box into the back of their cars on the way out of the DC these days

Take your pick :D

currently I have 4 connections of business cable feeds going into my server room. I do plan on renting a rs server.

One thing I do offer my users that they seem to love.. locally owned, operated and run servers..

I will need to keep one for the small users that want to keep the hosting locally, then I can move all the rest over to RS..

I currently pay $150 CDN for each 70gig package I have.. they each come with 5 ips..

I plan on getting rid of 2 of them and using the money I save to purchase my RS ;)

When I got my local service here, I wasnt familar with RS and hosting wasnt on my high priority list,so I got the business cable to provide my dialup users..

(my business cable is plenty fast enough for the small sites I host currently, never had any complaints yet) cheapest I could get a T1 here is $1750 CDN..

I will be installing one by mid august for my dialup users.

I know this might sound pitiful to a few of you, but I wanted to start off small without too big an investment.. and grow as I found it feasable :)

The problem I have with dedicated servers is you cannot get what you want without spending big $$$. A little shopping on eBay can yeild a dependable Compaq/HP Server with a nice RAID card, hot swappable raid 5 SCSI drives, teamed NICs that are configured for failover and a lights out card so you can reboot the box and see the entire process. (Don't forget dual processors and lots of RAM.) Cost for server, under $500.

Install the OS you want the way you want it and get access the way you want it.

This seems like a great deal to me.
