Hi all

Wanted to share with you my recent experiences with Interland.

Since the company I work for does much of its development using Microsoft products, I've been using Interland as a host. Interland offers NT/Win2k servers and SQL Server 7, as per my company's requirements. Until recently, the service has worked out pretty well. Customer service has been pretty good, and downtime was virtually zero. To keep track of downtime, I decided to sign up for ArsDigita's Uptime service. Uptime requests a page from the server every 15 minutes or so. If the page is unreachable, Uptime pages me.

Since the July 4th holiday, I've been getting paged a little too often for my liking. I've also noticed the site going down while I'm using it ... and then getting paged by Uptime within a few minutes. Below is the record of incidents that Uptime has reported.

I passed this record on to Interland and asked them what the problem was. I asked if it was something someone from my team was doing which might be the cause of the downtime.

Their reponse was nothing. They closed tickets without providing any information. Apart from checking to see if the server was up, they failed to look into the problem at all. I told them that it was critical to our business that the site remain up, since our clients review documents on the site, and it's incredibly embarrassing when the site goes down during a client meeting. No response.

Finally, they responded and suggested that we put in a request for a server move. They acknowledged that the server had been having troubles and we could either wait until the server was fixed, or, in the event that it couldn't be fixed, everyone would be moved to a new server, or we could jump the gun and request the move. After requesting the move, we would have to move the files ourselves. The customer service rep was very nice and all, but I must say, I'm very disappointed with the options they offered.

Any suggestions? We are now looking for an alternative host. Any recommendations?

Thanks,
Graham

Hi,
<<EDIT>>

...also you can post at
http://forums.webhostdir.com
At webhostdir you can also do a search by requirement, and get a listing of companies, and then follow up.
As far as Interland....well this testimonial thread sums it up!

Site5 has been teriffic with little downtime, and their packages are loaded with features, and their prices are very cheap.

a shortlist which I have arrived at from wht and various sources will be :

terabyte
valuablehost
site5
westhost
xensei
qwk
dezines
voxeldot

NOT necessarily in that order - infact I am trying to find out an order -by
more searches in forums
ping/ services like internetsteer/qwkmon
testing the hosts own site + sites hosted by them
by test of 3 - test at 3 diff times of a day, of a week,of a month(uptime)
test thru 3 ISPs at least(connectivity)
test thru modem, ISDN , proxy servers
