How would people begin to start comparing these two operating systems?

On the one hand, I hear that rh 7.3 with apache is possibly the most stable server arrangement.

However, I also hear that FreeBSD is far less open to hacking.

What are the actual strengths and weaknesses of the two?

A general inquiry.

FreeBSD is superior to RedHat in both stability and security. RedHat has better software availability, there are many applications that are Linux only at this point and you need to add a compatibility layer to FreeBSD to run them. RedHat is simpler to use that FreeBSD as well.

I ran basic servers with 1 GB Ram and SCSI up to 60 mbps and with IDE up to 35 mbps without a problem, all on RH 7.2 or 7.3

FreeBSD is far better for server usage than Red Hat Linux.

FreeBSD is free. Redhat is... well, as far as I can tell, it's free as long as you don't want the latest security patches.
