Just a few things to look into:

1: Does your ISP allow you to run a webserver off your broadband connection?

2: Is port 80 Open?

3: What is your upload speed, and can it handle the expected traffic?

Just a couple things to look into while your thinking about doing this.

Those are all good point Lippy

The better question is, "Can it handle the expected AND unexpected traffic?"

Static IP address would be very helpful too if you don't want to have to mess around with dynamic DNS and so on.

Good points Lippy.
Most service providers are more concerned about bandwidth than the fact that you are running a server. One of the problems with allowing a server is that without knowledge of the security issues involved your server can act as a conduit for many unethical things.
If it is just for a personal site and not mission critical speed shouldn't be an issue.
Your host may block port 80 but there are ways around it, the only thing is, if they do block port 80 it's probably because they don't allow servers.
Finally, as far as the static IP issue goes, you can run your site no problem with a dynamic IP using a service like Zone Edit which is free. Most broadband providers seldom change the IP anyway and again if it is not a mission critical site it won't be a problem. Even if you IP changes the most downtime you will probably have is 30-60 minutes.

I should also point out that hosting a site on a DSL line is a bad idea. lol

It's not as fast as you think it is, when compared to the type of lines, we as hosts use.

While, if your site is going to be small, and only get some local traffic, then you're probably fine. However, I don't suggest hosting a site, that you plan to go global with.

I am in the UK and self hosting, the first few months will be a headache but once you get used to it I would neve go back. Make sure you have a good server and OS. Good luck
