Hi, Im currently looking to purchase a new server although im having a hard time to choose between 2 servers:

P3 1.13ghz
512ram
640gb bandwidth - HE.NET datacentre
Cpanel/WHM
99.9% uptime
100mb/s port
$150 + $100 setup fee

or

P4 2.4ghz
512ram
500gb bandwidth - Nac datacentre
Cpanel/WHM
99.9% uptime
10mb/s port
$150 + $0 setup fee

The server will be used to host clients. Which server do you believe would be better to get?

Thankyou

- Patrick

I'd say go for the first option.

Although the processor has half the power, it is likely to be a Coppermine which is tailored for servers whereas the P4 isn't. They both have the same amount of RAM so that isn't an issue.

Hurricane Electric maintain a very high level of uptime and their bandwidth is top quality. You also get more for your money with them.

The P3 server runs on a 100mbps port which is ten times faster than a 10mbps port (obviously :D) and will deliver content to the fiber backbone(s) quicker than a 10mbps port.

I hope this helps. :)

Second option. Since you're hosting websites the difference between a 10 mbps and 100 mbps port isn't going to make a difference. You most likely will not need the extra bandwidth, either.

I don't think even with the improvements of the coppermine processor a p3 1.13 ghz would outperform a p4 2.4 ghz.

thanks for that really helped me. Anyone else have their opinion?

And just to clarify, I meant Tualatin not Coppermine! :)

Im with amusive on this one. We use P4 2GHZ boxes for hosting and they run great! You wont have a problem with the server spec... and I doubt you would ever want your box bursting past 10mbps anyway so go with #2.

Having said all that I think I would prefer HE to NAC. Personal preference.

But isnt saying being hosted on He.net and on a 100mb/s port a good selling strategy? However saying being hosted on a P4 2.4ghz is also good. Which is better?

HE and NAC both have fairly good reputations. As you can see from the replies so far - it really is personal preference.

If you're selling to a shared hosting client I would think the faster processor. Most won't probably know about 10 mb and 100 mbps connections and if they do, I would hope they'd know it wouldn't matter too much :)

Remember what a typical end user knows and doesn't know. I think it's pretty likely, unless all your clients come from wht, they won't know what a HE.NET is either ;)

I have had servers at both he & nac, and the only time I had a problem with he was when the sql slammer hit. NAC on the other hand well do a search.

Thats true but you could reassure them saying that HE.NET is one of most reliable datacentres and as the people of WHT and other forums they seem to lean more to HE.NET

I prefer to sell my HE servers than any other, they seem to sell better. That must mean something.

have you looked at tranxactglobal.com. they dont charge set up charges and the same p4 with 500g bw and 100mbps transfer is just $169/mo. If you want a p3, their price is 139 for 100mbps port speed and 500g transfer. Check them out.

HE and NAC are both very good datacenters, but I think HE comes out ahead.

In this case, I'd say probably not... DV2 has a pretty good reputation around here, you'll find a rep on these boards under the name sailor.

DV2 have a good enough reputation to not have to make their reps sign up as new usernames each time a thread pops up that they could do. :)
