View Full Version : world's largest host?
iVersit 07-12-2001, 02:14 PM According to IDC, hostpro is the world's 4th largest host based on number of actual websites hosted. I was unable to find the largest without buying a $4,500 report. Does anyone know offhand who the largest host is? No guesses please.
Regards.
ReliableServers 07-12-2001, 05:08 PM ***** or pair.com? Just my guesses if its by actual domains hosted.
cperciva 07-12-2001, 05:36 PM pair.com says that they are around 100K domains.
I'd guess that Verio would be the largest.

If you're talking about market share, then the worldwide leader would be Exodus Communications (http://www.exodus.com/), with 32 data centers in 8 countries and serving a huge chunk of the Fortune 1000 companies.

SI-Chris 07-12-2001, 08:49 PM Verio claims that it's the worlds largest Web hosting company:
http://www.verio.com/company/about/background.cfm
I bet pair.com is the largest privately held, anyway. Verio rolled up so many smaller companies into one that they may very well be the biggest.... But who knows. :)
Regards,
thereismore 07-12-2001, 11:05 PM Didn't Orpheous say no guesses.......
But you know what? Nobody knows who the biggest is.
My guess would be Verio. And that is based on the amount of companies they have aquired (lately).
definately verio,
second in big traffic sites would probably be exodus.
RackMy.com 07-12-2001, 11:27 PM If you're talking about market share, then the worldwide leader would be Exodus Communications, with 32 data centers in 8 countries and serving a huge chunk of the Fortune 1000 companies. Not anymore, a lot have walked and more are leaving every day.
davidb 07-13-2001, 12:28 AM Does anyone know the largest webhosting, im not talking about dedicated servers and that stuff, I mean web sites on their servers? Is is still verio?
DanielP 07-13-2001, 02:18 AM Well, Davidb, depends on exactly what you want to know.
Is it more of a
which one webhost (i.e. jumpline olm ventures (he he sorry had to) etc) hosts the most virtual sites (domains)
or which network has the most virtual sites (domains)
Its hard to say if Verio would still win that one, as numbers are hard to trust to say the least....
davidb 07-13-2001, 02:23 AM I mean most virtual host customers, im thinking its *****, not sure though, I dont see how verio can be with their prices
UmBillyCord 07-13-2001, 02:24 AM Does anyone know the largest webhosting, im not talking about dedicated servers and that stuff, I mean web sites on their servers?
This depends on who's article you read or who's statistics you go by.
*Verio host the most web sites in the world.
*Exodus has the largest market share in the world (Yes -still. Even after the 150 million dollar loan payback that has put them in a bit of financial problems).
*Last I read, Pair was the largest *private* host. However ***** is gaining.
I just read in the new Web Host Mag that Micron(Host Pro)/Interland are now stating after the March merger, they host more domains then Verio. 230,000 sites.
Who the hell knows.
DanielP 07-13-2001, 02:27 AM Well, it also depends on what defines a site..
I could say I host 13,000+ sites just on virtual accounts. But that would include parked domains, subdomains, subfolders the whole 9 yards...
I guess its one of the mysteries of the universe we call the internet :)
davidb 07-13-2001, 02:40 AM I think I have a good idea now. I was mainly thinking of customers, weather they had 5 domains or 1.
Thanks for the info everyone.
Adam_S 07-13-2001, 02:41 AM and we always have UK2.net you say that THEY ARE the biggest host in the world... yea right..
http://amail.co.uk/system.htm (second paragraph)
I think this page sums up uk2.net.. It's just full of cr*p..
-Edward- 07-13-2001, 07:14 AM I thought UK2.NET claimed to be the biggest in Europe not the world? guess i should visit there site more often.

Whoa... hold on.. if we've pretty much thrashed out the fact that you really couldn't determine how many sites actually exist (domain parking, etc... ) how the heck can someone even attempt to charge $4,500 for so much guess work?
Well ok, very well written, consultant speak type guess work but pretty much amounting to the same thing. :D
Yowch!

They do. Throughout their site they claim to be the biggest in the UK, then europe, then the world. I'm surprised they haven't said that they are the largest in the milkyway.
That system page I posted above... you noticed how they mapped out three level three providers... what the hell has UK2.net got to do with those maps?!?!

That's pretty standard pricing for those type of reports in most industries...they are developed by private consulting firms, and they charge all the traffic will bear...their target market for them: big business and industry associations, both of which have the budgets to afford them and the need to purchase them. It's quite a racket.
iVersit 07-13-2001, 10:38 AM Almost makes me wish I'd been a statistician.....almost.....:D
-Edward- 07-13-2001, 10:48 AM They claim thats who carry's there traffic.

Well that's it for web hosting for me... I'm off to start my own consultancy... looks like that's where the real money is...
Oh evil thought... has Tim Greer thought about doing that sort of thing... his reports would be VERY impressive
*cough*... and long.. :D
Sorry Tim, couldn't resist. :cartman: :cartman:
Eat Crow 07-13-2001, 11:08 AM I believe OLM.net is one of the largest privately owned hosting companies at this point...
They boast more domains than pair.com and *****...
How accurate that is, we can only guess...
DanielP 07-13-2001, 02:37 PM Well, even if OLM isn't the largest , i'd assume they have the most cash flow, considering the commercials of theirs that are popping up on TechTV etc... haven't seen Pair or Communitech try that one yet.
md201 07-13-2001, 03:14 PM I think verio because I have hared about it at many places. exodus is also the one but they have pause the plans for there 3 data centers and at present are using only 60% capacity on there main center. However i do not take any responsibility for above information. ;)
