Hi,

I currently have a dedicated server but wish to have a second for a large project of mine, the server will need to handle hits, we have had a private bb system up for a while and has 40 members with more than 1 million hits a month at some stages.

The second site it will need to handle is a much bigger one which could end up getting more then 10k hits a day, i know this is a lot and you prob wont think it will but i know it will as we have done some tests :D

So basically i need a server which can handle 2 large databases, for the new bbs we will either be using info pops UBB or vBulittetin which they use here. What kind of spec would we need to handle this trafic and who can provide it at a resonable price, i think around 50gb datatransfere is the minimum and it can be located in the USA although it will be only UK people but its cheaper out there.

Also it must have some type of control panel for me to add these domains to it and set up email etc.

Thanks for reading, please post!

First, 1 million hits/month is more than 10 thousand/day; are those actually the numbers you mean?

As for what sort of server you'll need, can *cough* someone here *cough* with experience running a well-trafficed forum using vB comment on how much cpu time WHT is using? (And how many hits it receives). With those figures it should be possible to estimate how powerful a server you'd need.

seems i calculated wrong must have pressed two many zeros, basicaly the old site which will go on there aswel get 500k hits a month when it is busy so ocasioanel times in the year it will need a lot of bandwith although it is slowing down a bit, the other site will take around 1 month to get up to speed :) and it will easily reach 10k hits i have been told, but when we allow other country's to use the ubb the trafic could be amazing, i just need what spec we would need and how much datatransfere etc and the cost for this with some links :)

thanks

What type of forum software are you using? What does it run off of? CGI, PHP, or? What type of OS? 10K hits a day isn't that much, but it surely depends on what language and interface this forum has and how well it's built, bot it ulitizes or abuses the system's resources, etc. If it's a decent build forum, it should be able to have more than 10K hits a day on it and only need around 128 Megs RAM and around a 300 MHZ CPU... But, depending on the software, it could need 256+ megs RAM and a 500 MHX+ CPU. Also, other variables come into play, but it really depends on a lot of factors and it's difficult to guess.

Well, forums can be very intensive on the server if they are very busy at times, I would recommend a p3 700 (usually the min you can get these days) with 256MB ram and a SCSI drive. 10K hits a day would probably need around a 100GB bandwidth a month.
