venomx 07-11-2001, 07:04 PM Oh man he/she is back!
Eagle 07-11-2001, 07:37 PM venomx: hehe lol :D
Duster 07-12-2001, 01:51 AM How does $49 a year = free? Under what form of mathematics does that equation balance?
venomx 07-12-2001, 07:19 AM THe certificate is free but the "spoof guard" aka "smart icon" is $49
Duster 07-12-2001, 09:32 AM I see, the old sleight of hand mathematics, like saying you get a free car, but the title and registration will cost you $29,000.
Chicken 07-12-2001, 10:03 AM I think what's missing here is exactly what you have to purchase to get the free SSL cert, or I guess, what you *are* spending money on? Nothing wrong with offering something free with the purchase, that's rather common in many different biz areas, but either I'm slow and thick, or it isn't posted as to exactly what you *are* buying???
Maybe it is one of those, you have to see the site for details things....
slade 07-12-2001, 01:36 PM No, I don't think you're slow...
Two things:
1) This cert is only compatible with IE 5.01 and higher.
2) You have to sign up for their "verification" service called ********. Basically this does a lookup to their database to make sure the site is actually registered with them. **You get a cool icon with this** (um, whatever) and this costs $49/year.
I read an FTC report on usage of the word "Free" in advertising, but it's been a while, so I can't remember if this use is actually legal.
:kaioken: Take that Marketing Morons...
Get-Hosted.com 07-12-2001, 02:33 PM This use is perfectly legal... when buying the $49 product you get an Equifax SSL Cert... not their cert which is 70% compatible (IE 5.01 +). After you buy the $49 Equifax cert... you get as many 70% SSL certs as you want.... for free.
valueservices 07-12-2001, 02:44 PM I don't think there is a requirement to buy anything before you get the free 70% certs. Of course that's what they would prefer, but I couldn't find any mention to buying the validation service before you could receive the free cert.
Get-Hosted.com 07-12-2001, 02:58 PM Yah... I think you can get the 70% SSL cert free without any purchase.

slade 07-15-2001, 01:20 PM Anyone been able to actually get a free cert from them?
I tried(what the hay, it's free for a year), but after I hit Submit, NOTHING HAPPENS. Tried 4 times on 2 different days.

JapAniManga.ch 07-18-2001, 06:03 PM Hi,
tryed today again to get a FreeSSL and the Error is now killed/away !
I got now one, its realy only takes arount 1 Hour (after you send the Form, then confirm the Mail, ...).
I tested it with IE5.5 = no Problem, NN 5.74 & 6.x = dont accept the Cert (must manualy accept it) but I think its not the fault of FreeSSL its more of Netscape (the former best Browser of the World) then IE knows FreeSSL since 09. July 1999 !
For your Info: I made everything with WHM (WebHostManager) and was realy easy
sbrad 07-18-2001, 08:14 PM I got one within an hour. Works great in IE.
slade 07-18-2001, 08:20 PM grr... Still doesn't go through for me... just sits there...
Get-Hosted.com 07-18-2001, 08:39 PM The free certs Only work with Internet Explorer version 5.01 and up. No netscape.
sbrad 07-18-2001, 09:07 PM grr... Still doesn't go through for me... just sits there...
What part doesn't work for you? The ordering part? Or do you mean you already have it installed and the certificate itself doesn't work?
slade 07-19-2001, 09:54 AM Not getting anywhere after I push the submit button.
But someone emailed me about it and said they thought my CSR was bad... gonna try again.
drhonk 07-19-2001, 02:23 PM They did have problem with their web script. I sent them an email regarding that problem, and reply , even called me to let me know that they've fixed it. I finally got a cert from them, and it's working great.
venomx 07-19-2001, 03:12 PM Yes but what good is it if it only works 70% of the time?
sbrad 07-19-2001, 05:31 PM Well, this is pretty cool. I just grabbed a second one, and signed up with their affiliate program. The 98% compatible certs are from Equifax, and they sell for $45. That's a pretty good value to be able to add, me thinks.

whoa! we recently got 2 certs from Equifax and i thought we got a pretty good deal with the $99 certs.
is it really $45 for an Equifax cert ? :smash:
drhonk 07-19-2001, 05:45 PM they told me on the phone that their new version which will be available in a few weeks would support more browser.

is it going to be free
drhonk 07-19-2001, 05:52 PM only the first year going to be free... the second I think they going to charge a small fee for renewal.
DHWWnet 07-19-2001, 05:55 PM Do you know what the small fee is? 45?50?
I think they are ok ..on the other hand i think getting one directly at Equifax is better.

Yeah, that's if you sign up for their affiliate program. It's so cheap I can offer it as a value-added service on my higher end accounts.

What affiliate program are you talking about?
sbrad 07-20-2001, 01:14 PM What affiliate program are you talking about?
Well, when I got the first cert, I guess they noticed I had a hosting company, so the emailed me about it. Email me if you want the info.
venomx 07-20-2001, 04:49 PM When I hit the submit button it sits there and does nothing

I never actually got a results page from them...
But this afternoon I received my email'ed cert, but it won't install :bawling: (submitted ticket to webhost)
Check your browser version. I don't know if it makes a difference, but I had tried 4 or so times before with no luck, and today I upgraded IE to 5.01(didn't realize I didn't have it) and tried again. Still no response, but did get that email...
venomx 07-20-2001, 08:15 PM yeah I got an emailed cert too... thing is I went to WHM and tried to install. I hit the "Do it" button and nothing.

1. Try it with Netscape and then the "Do it"-Button works, had the same Problem
2. Do not make this Installation in WHM -) make it manually via Telnet or so (on the Site where you got the Cert should be a Info how you can make this), WHM crashed My Apache completely (RIP) and need to be fixed via Technican (a big thanks to Jeff & Support-Team of Serverhost.com).
slade 07-24-2001, 10:26 PM Hmm... trying Netscape...
Attempting to verify your certificate.....
Cerificate appears to be intact
error 20 at 0 depth lookup:unable to get local issuer certificate
The CRT for the domain untap.net was installed on the ip 64.46.96.33.
Well, did it work, or not?
Do I need to restart apache(like the fressl page said)?
drhonk 07-24-2001, 10:44 PM I don't think it suppose to work with Netscape yet. I know most versions of IE will
sbrad 07-24-2001, 11:33 PM Do I need to restart apache(like the fressl page said)?
You DO have to restart Apache after installing a cert...but I don't know if that's the problem or not.

Hmm... 2am, who'll know
Update:
Didn't crash apache. But no ssl :(
Anyone actually get these Equifax secure certs?
slade 08-01-2001, 03:49 PM Last night, I tried again, went through the entire process.
Created a Cert Signing Request, went to www.freessl.com, pasted it in. It actually worked this time, and I got a success page, with some more info to fill out.
Responded to the email they sent me, with an approve.
A few mins later, they sent me back the real cert. and i pasted it in. Failed with IE 501(same as last time), but it worked with Netscape 4.07.
It seems to be running ok, but I haven't quite figured it all out.
NOTE: When you are building the Cert Signing Request, make sure you put exactly what domain you want the cert for. Sounds redudant, I know, but if you want it for mydomain.com, that's not the same as www.mydomain.com, and it will give an error when you try and go there.
Yeah, I'm not looking for the FreeSSL one but for the 98% one which is a Equifax Cert. I called the number in the first post and am awaiting a response...
Teck, to get the 98% compatible 128-bit cert, you pay USD59 for it at GeoTrust.com (meaning you have to sign up for their Trus Site thingy).
microsol 08-05-2001, 08:38 AM Buahhh. I ordered my free SSL cert 72 hours ago and i have nothing yet. Not even a answer on my support request. :( :( :(
arrty 08-05-2001, 08:46 AM I have a number of certs from them and they always give it in 12 hours or less. Once there was a problem with their server so i had to signup four times to finally get it but its ok now (i think)
venomx 08-05-2001, 10:45 AM For some reason I cant get the cert to install via WHM..
NightHawk 08-05-2001, 12:12 PM I can't get the free ssl cert to install in WHM either......
MCHost-Marc 08-11-2001, 01:24 AM Exactly the same problem here. We're just right now trying to install it for a customer. When installing it with WHM, the form won't submit with the cert pasted . We're gonna try a manual installation now...

How about an update if/when you get it figured out, Kiwi??
AL-Benjamin 08-12-2001, 09:50 AM i ordered one of the 59 certs. that was almost a week ago. still nothing.
