View Full Version : are rackshack's dedicated servers managed?
lobaloba9 06-06-2003, 01:32 PM correct me if i'm wrong
the diff b/w dedicated servers and shared webhosting is
- for dedicated servers, you have the entire server all for yourself and for shared hosting, you share it with other people.
is that the only difference? how about the "managed" part? do the webhost provider still manage the dedicated server for us, just like how they manage their shared webhosting servers?
or do they just give us root access to the dedicated servers and leave us alone?
i want a dedicated server but i have no experience in managing a dedicated server.
so... i found pair.com's quickserve dedicated server.
correct me if i'm wrong, these servers are MANAGED servers right? that means it is exactly the same as signing up for a shared hosting plan, except that i have the whole server resource all for myself.
is rackshack's dedicated servers managed too? or do i have to manage it myself?
if i have to manage it myself, what exactly do i have to manage? install software???
steve248 06-06-2003, 01:51 PM Rackshacks servers are not managed, you do it yourself. You can however pay people like easyservermanagement to do this for you. Don't know about pair.
alapo 06-06-2003, 02:06 PM RS will offer managed services soon I believe.
steve248 06-07-2003, 10:08 AM It is rumered that it will be in their announcement... We will have to wait and see though.
Amdac 06-07-2003, 10:55 AM If you plan on becoming a webhost, you wont want a managed server. It defeats the entire purpose of being a webhost.
lobaloba9 06-07-2003, 12:30 PM how do you actually manage a server remotely?
i.e. how do someone in peru manage a dedicated server with rackshack?
how does he install software on the server w/o being physically there?
dynamicnet 06-07-2003, 12:41 PM Greetings:
Any device (servers included) that allow for administrative access (login user id and appropriate rights) can be managed remotely using various telecommunication programs and protocols.
SSH is a very common protocol for managing UNIX-based boxes, for example.
Most data centers, like Rackshack, allow their servers to be managed by individuals and organizations so long as they have the proper software and login id’s.
Thank you.

You've been brainwashed by microsoft. You do not need to be sitting infront of a *nix based machine to install software. Someone in Peru has the exact same access as someone sitting infront of the server.

Except if the owner does not know how to upgrade the kernel or change the network settings :)

dynamicnet 06-08-2003, 09:18 AM Greetings Eric:
You are correct.
However, if you have good internal quality assurance, stuff like that happens extremely rarely.
Furthermore, if you a planner, you would have made arrangements with the data center for them to have some one on hand in case that happens.
We are in Berks County, Pennsylvania, US and one of our furthest server administration jobs was in Dublin, Ireland (of note, we’ve done work for clients over Europe, but almost all of them have their servers in the US).
While we would have loved to travel to Dublin (it is still on my travel wish list items), we never left our office.
We set up five servers – load balancing, database server, mail server and backup server talking over the VLAN to the two load balanced Web servers – from scratch without a hitch.
The bottom line is that you can remotely manage devices and machines without regard to physical location.
Thank you.

I totally agree with you. We have a lot of racks worldwide and have multiple levels of support from the datacenter, local engineers and our guru guys too.
We maintain ALL our servers remotely, and some of them are located 9 hours from where our guru admins are :)
But my answer was more to the question "do I need to be in front of the server to manage it" which comes from a person with not much experience in remote administration.

Eric

Since this point wasn't addressed, yes, Quickserve is just like a shared server except all of the resources are yours. All system maintenance, upgrades, hardware, etc, are handled by pair.

lobaloba9, I don't want to bust on pair.com but Rackshack has an excellent reputation and you could hire a management company like ACT for your server and you would still come out ahead. A typical plan with pair gives 100 GB traffic while with rackshack you get 700 GB. Compare features on the different plans and I think you will see you come out ahead with Rackshack. You can also learn how to run your server while allowing it to be managed by ACT so eventually you could manage it yourself.
Does ACT take care of every aspect of the server?? including management trouble shooting attackes hacking etc..including management trouble shooting etc..

They are the furthest thing from managed. :dunce:

I dunno... I'd say serverbeach is. They charge just to submit a ticket, and if it's anything non-basic they charge $75/hour on top of that.
RS has come a long way, and they often do little things for customers. I know many people were pissed at their complete "hardcore" restore-only ways previously, but I hear it has gotten much better.
