View Full Version : Speed of dedicated DB server WITHOUT internal network...

Hi all,

After more research I am 99.9% convinced I'll be migrating our data to dedicated servers instead of colocating. For the last week we've been going back and forth, but that is likely where we'll end up.

I am, however, a bit concerned about one potentially big shortcoming as compared to our current setup, and that is running multiple connected servers, primarily separate web servers and database servers... and we are talking all MS (IIS and SQL)...

Previously, of course, we connected via an internal LAN... now, however, we'll be hitting db servers over the Internet... obvious potential security issues (which we can address very easily), but more disconcerting is the speed degradation...

Anyone have any thoughts are real-world experience? We are no longer looking at colocating our servers, so we have made the definite decision to go dedicated. Will this adversely impact us or can we set it up in some way so that it still performs well?

Thanks!!!

performance is not what you should be looking at. while i am not familiar with the nt kernel (ask me about linux, please =), i would assume that sharing a buffer and priority queues for both the ingress traffic and the db traffic isnt great. however, it should not be a major bottleneck.

what you should be looking at is transfer utilization. if you connect to the db server through the provider's switch, all traffic between the web and db server are going to count against your allotment irrespective of whether it egressed the provider's network (unless they do some monekying around with vlans, which is not likely to happen).

if you want to have a setup such as this, i would strongly suggest colo'ing the boxes you purchase yourself from a company like dell that would provide onsite service if necessary.
