View Full Version : Surpasshosting.com - so far so good

It's not often I post about a host that hasn't screwed up royally, but for those looking for hosting, I just moved to surpasshosting.com about a week or so ago and it's been pretty good so far. Customer support the first day was great (like 5min responses to my emails), but I've sent email to support since then and have still had no reply. But the service so far (I'm running Host Monitor on it as I do all my hosts) is good - 99.85% uptime over about the last 10 days. Speeds are good enough to keep up with my cablemodem, and cheap plans.

But with that said, customer support (which when rating, for me, is basically response times) is bad. Less than 24 hrs to reply is considered "good" by me. But I upped my site in .zip format thinking I could just ssh in and unzip it, but zip isn't a "recognized command" - I emailed them about it twice like 10 days ago and still haven't received a reply. Anyway, I upped the site file by file and it's running good / fast so far (knock on wood).

You say you've been with them for a week but you were looking for a host on 06-01-2003
What is your site with them?

Ok, not quite a week yet... 4-5 days. My site is www.ontariostorms.com (personal non-commercial site)

How much of a realistic 'review' can you possibly do after "four or five days?"

You certainly can't help your new host or anyone looking for hosting with this thread.

Let us know how you're getting along in a few months.

This is good news? Then again you did say support was bad. "But with that said, customer support (which when rating, for me, is basically response times) is bad."

Well, if you look at his second post, Curtis H., he's only been with them four, maybe five, days. So, he didn't email them twice ten days ago.

Good to see you're happy (Or are you?) with your host. Good luck with the coming months.

However....

Sounds like one of those WHM/cPanel hosts. If WHM can't fix it, or it doesn't come pre-installed. They don't know what to do. I only say that, since it seems like they don't know what to do with unzip.

EDIT: To make it clearer.

"unzip" only became available in RedHat 7.3, I believe. So I guess they are on an older OS - RH 7.2 maybe (if they are running RedHat). They could upgrade to 7.3 but it's a difficult thing to do and requires an admin with real knowledge. Was no problem for us, ahe.

I've been with surpass hosting for almost six months and I'm very satisfied with their services and uptime.

My site with surpass is:
www.craalumni.com

z0diac,
Thank you for the post..
I think I talked to you before on AIM about this. I see you have already upped your site but I will mention the following info anyway..
If you send a request to support they can install just about anything for you. You don't have to get SSH access just for that kind of task when you can request us to do it. Did you get a ticket number? If you did not, they don't have your request.
You can send your ticket number to me at anytime and I can monitor the progress for you.
Yes, the speed is good if not great (according to other client comments I've received lately). Thanks for mentioning that.

NexDog, we have RH7.3.

In that case Kayla, there should be no problem. :)

No.. there aren't any problems. You are right.
But I don't do the support email really so I don't ask too many questions.

NexDog: Are you sure? I remember I used to use unzip on RH 6.2 all the time.

I just checked the RH 6.2 cd and the unzip rpm is there. Anyway, why would he need to install a new distro? Why not just compile from the source? (I'm probably just missing something really obvious here ;))

I had 6.2 on my old comp, but it wasn't a server.
Probably had unzip, too. Probably had a lot of things I didn't know about. I just really enjoy the screen savers the most. :erm:

That was a good one Kayla... :)

Hey.. really... they are very scientific and cool.
Much better than Windows defaults.. like Mystify Your Mind which is quite repetitive and dull.
C'mon they removed the excellent Hot Dog Stand theme from Win 3.1, yet they are going to leave Mystify Your Mind as a screen saver for 20 years? Sad.
