Does anyone know of any hosting companies based in the greater Boston area? I am looking into setting up a new site for a nonprofit that I am involved with and they may be more comfortable working with a local company. This is something that probably wouldn't happen for a while (ie it is a project exists only as some rough ideas in a few peoples heads right now).

Why do you want a host in your area. If a host is located in Boston, generally, their servers will be somewhere else

I don't really care myself, but some people have a strong preference for working with local businesses. Something to do with a sense of community in the physical world ;)
I'm really just looking to see if there are any good options that would make everyone happy. If not, I will probably go with the company that I use for my personal domain, even though they are based in the midwest and have their servers in Maryland (like I said, the location concerns are not mine).

Not necessarily. In the Boston area are two big hosting facilities belonging to Exodus and Genuity's got a couple as well.
In addition, there are a number of smaller facilities scattered around-we know a number of their owners by at least nodding aquaintance.
The hosts whose servers reside here are all local folks, and that's the case with most of our colleagues' customers as well.

Well, since nobody answered the original question.. I guess I'll chirp in. Hope this doesn't count as advertising, but WE'RE located in Boston (dreamhost.com). Actually, we've got two offices, one in L.A. and one in Boston, but all the servers are in California. I'm not sure if that makes the definition of "based" in Boston, but, yeah, anyway!

And since you chirped in, so will I.
We are also based in Boston, with another office in San Francisco.:)

Many Bostonians will envy you. Especially in the middle of winter.
I guess that begs the question, how to define 'based in' for Joe 52's purposes?
If the offices of the company is in Boston, but the servers are hosted elsewhere.
If the offices of the company are physically located elsewhere, but the servers or hosted in Boston.
If both offices and servers are physically located in the Boston area.
Which is the most important?

We are based just outside Boston in Fitchburg, Massachusetts - but our servers are in San Jose, California, so...
But anyone is welcome to stop by our offices to say hello!
