Normally I'd log on and updated topics since my last visit would be clearly indicated with a graphic - and ermain so during my visit.

However, at the moment I'm not seeing that - instead, only those topics updated or new since I logged on are showing this way.

Have the cookie settings changed, or is this user error?

Check your browser settings. Acc. to me Nothing has changed since a long time.
