Hostway, Why so cheap?

While you buy your name there, they're hoping you'll also use one of their other services. Btw...I think all domains are bought for $6 and any profit above that is the sellers. :D simposoner 06-03-2003, 05:52 AM So can they beat Enom and Go daddy? Not to mention Enom's resellers. UH-Matt 06-03-2003, 06:31 AM I had a good discussion about this with xreg. By offering domains so cheaply its a loss leader. They are gaining huge amounts of traffic and a large contact/customer base which they can then offer services to such as hosting - an excellent marketing concept. nainil 06-03-2003, 06:49 AM Actually for any hosting company, DOMAIN is it's starting point to attract customers. UH-Matt 06-03-2003, 06:50 AM Originally posted by nainil Actually for any hosting company, DOMAIN is it's starting point to attract customers. Thats incorrect. We dont put much emphasis on selling domains at all yet continue to expand at a fairly rapid rate. nainil 06-03-2003, 06:58 AM Once a good customer base is built up, then you would not necessarily require the domain business. But till that, USUALLY, as far as I have known, domain is the starting point to HOSTING business. UH-Matt 06-03-2003, 07:01 AM All in your opinion of course. Everyone has there own strategy. But till that, USUALLY, as far as I have known, domain is the starting point to HOSTING business. I can't really agree with that. Until the last couple of years, you could only register your domains at one place, NetSol. So hosting has always been very seperate from the domain business. However, I doubt Hostway is using it to gain a good customer base considering they are one of the largest hosting businesses in the world anyway. Just my 2 cents. simposoner 06-03-2003, 07:15 PM So you mean that they want more market even though they have already got a lot? My opinion is they can set their price as low as they want. However, if there is no or little profit, and this of course will hurt a lot of companies. No good for them and no good for us. They are greedy. ddent 06-03-2003, 11:54 PM Maybe they have volume commitments, and it is cheaper to offer the domains at a loss than it is to not sell them at all? Who knows though. 1000s of reasons. |
