View Full Version : Removing a .pkg file

I just setup a new Raq4r, and was loading all the updates. On one of the particularly large ones, I uploaded it to /home/packages directory, and then installed it via the Cobalt control panel.
This may be a silly question, but I just wanted to make sure it was ok to delete the .pkg file from this directory since it has been installed.

When you perform the upload to the /home/packages directory yourself, then it is OK to remove the .pkg from that directory after a successful install.

Having said that, you might want to keep the pkg file somewhere in case you have to rebuild your server. If you keep the pkg files locally, then you can apply all the patches from the pkg files without having to connect your box to the internet.

It is wise to apply all the security patches before you connect a new or rebuilt box to the internet.

Yeah, that much I knew. And I've been wringing my hands since this afternoon trying to get all of them installed and then Port Sentry. Some people think it takes hackers a while to find your machine after you get it online. But I experienced one of the Chinese hacks a couple of months ago within 2 hours of plugging my machine up to the internet.
