Hi all :)

I am looking for hosting that has asp or coldfusion and a cgi-bin.
And most importantly, I don't want to buy a domain name.

Except for m6.net (which seems having lots of downtime), are there any other hosting doesn't require user to have a domain name?

Please give me some suggestions & really thanks for your help!!!:D

Why no domain name?

You can get one for around £10 / $12.

If you choose not to have one, it means you will be stuch with http://www.host.com/~users/server1/accountname - a really long name like that....

You could probably work that out with most hosts. It would be a bit complicated (especially with email...are you yourname@host.com or yourname@yourname.host.com?), but most hosts would happily work things out.

Are you sure?
Because I have a site without domain and the email works fine with name@iphere

Interesting...

That would be an address that I would expect to bounce and not even try...

Maya,

Most hosts would offer yourname.hostname.com as an alternative. But I wouldn't look for a price break because of it. Whether you have a domain or sub-domain, you'll end up using the resouces to have the account live.

Hello
In our experince most non domain accounts end up being spammers, so we don't offer them now.

We do offer subdomains of one of our domains, but only if we know the customer or they are a reputable business.
For example we host a subsection of a major newspaper site under a subdomain, although the pages appear in their frames.
As they are a household name there was no chance of them being spammers or fraudsters.

Why not get your host to issue a subdomain on one of their domains?

Any specific reason for this? Because its true as the others say - IP Accounts are usually used for hacking and spamming

Thanks for the replies :)

I am just planning to have some space for my personal website and it seems a bit strange for such a small site to have a domain name.

Currently, I have hosted my site on some free asp hosting, but the downtime is frequent and the speed is low and I always worry if it will shut down the service later.

Personally, I prefer a subdomain rather than sth like http://www.somehost.net/server1/~username.
And I don't care that much about email addresses, sth like myname@username.somehost.net is ok.

Please give me further suggestions if possible. Thanks! :D

If you want to send an email directly to an IP, you can just do it this way:

username@[ip-address]

I.e. enclose the IP in brackets:

god@[111.111.111.111]

That's the "standard way".

There are a lot of hosts with no cost hosting that you might try if you really don't want a domain name. Geocities, Tripod and others are just a few.

Sub domains were probably more common a few years ago when NSI was the only registrar and domains cost $100 for 2 years (later $70). they have gotten so cheap now (under $10) that anyone wanting a subdomain is suspect, especially since many have ended up to be spammers. They implicate the poor trusting host since it is their domain that is used. There are probably a few hosts who do accounts like hostdomains.com/~youraccountname, though not many, for the same reason as above.

There is a good reason to get your own domain name, even for a small personal site. As you move from one host to another, as you are doing now, you only have to move the site, not the address. Anyone that has your site bookmarked will still be able to find it when you move.

Doubt -

1. no need to post message here. Simply contact all host through any web hosting directory, which is possible now by one click.

2. One can register a domain name with fake name and simply use it to get an account with any company. I am sure many spammers have several domain names with fake name and address details.

the only thing i could think of is a sub-domian name and with all the reqiurments you need i suggest freeservers.com or 0catch.com if not those do a search for something at freewebspace.com.

True, and I agree these are more common, especially the ones that put hello for everything in the whois , but most sensible dont accept them anyways...I always do lookups on the domain before even thinking of creating the account. ;)
