First off hosts that use Linux also use Apache.Apache is just the web server software. Hosts that offer NT hosting use Microsofts IIS web server software.
Now then... I prefer Linux hosting because of the stability. I am also used to Linux based hosts. However a lot of people like to use NT/Windows2000 for Active Server Pages (ASP) and other windows only programs.

a lot of people think windows based is easier. And I would have to agree. Unless you require Unix Based (which it sounds like you wont) you should go with windows.
Just my opinion.

Also, Unix and Linux are very alike. I personally prefer the unix/BSD route, but linux is 9/10 times just as good. As said before, Apache is the web server that runs in a unix/linux environment and IIS is the web server that runs in a Windows NT/2000 environment.
Unix/Linux is often times picked for stability, ease of use, and reliability. Windows is usually picked for ASP or other windows-specific applications (like said before)..
Hope that clears some things up for ya. :)

Some people also run Apache on Windows. Haven't tried it myself, but I haven't heard any complaints about it.

I disagree. Most people that are new to web hosting have no idea what platform their website is hosted on. All they know is that they put an index.html file in a folder and it shows up in their browser. Additionally, I think most *nix hosts provide much better and friendlier user control panels, which is really important to a new user.

And for the opposing opinion, unless you really need a server running NT, such as ASP or FrontPage server extensions, you should use Unix.
I never recommend anyone use NT hosting unless they need it. From an FTP standpoint, they are virtually identical in ease of use.

Hi,
My personal views are it depends on what you need and which OS you are more comfortable with.
Personally I prefer Unix than Windows although I am more used to Windows platform. In Windows, you don't need to worry about the files/directories permission but in terms of security... Unix is more secure to what I know (especially to virus).
Regarding Apache, it is just a web server software. I have it installed in my win98 computer for programming purposes :)
Just my thoughts ;)
