i currently have my domain name w/ register.com...
is there a way to transfer my domain name
to another hosting service where i dont have to continue paying the 35.00 yr to them?

Sure. There are lots of domain registration companies that would love to save you some money.
I am really impressed with GoDaddy (http://www.godaddy.com). I think it only costs around $8 per year, and you get a great control panel to manage your domain with.

do i have to host with godaddy if i transfer my domain name?

Nope. Although they do provide hosting services, that is in addition to domain name registration. You can host it anywhere you want. All you have to do is provide them with at least a primary and secondary dns server.

You don't have to host with them to get / transfer a domain to them :)

I own a hosting company, so I use myself!
