with my current host I have the possibility to create of these /~user subaccounts for my collegues. Is this a common feature?

I mean I'm hesitating to give out a lot of those, because I might not be able to provide them if ever I should move host and the new one will not provide the feature...

Yes, this is fairly common. It is also not uncommon to see subdomain1.yourdomain.com, etc.

Here is what you have to remember: Whatever happens under your domain, YOU are responsbile for. This means anything from disk usage, to bandwidth, to content, to SPAM. ANYTHING.

Be sure and make your colleagues aware of the fact that not only are you responsible for what they do with your account, but also that you cannot guarantee their data, or that they will continue to have an account if you need to change hosts.

Be sure they all get copies of the host's Terms of Service, and abide by them. You might also want to work out a way of getting compensated if they decide to cost you money in overage charges or TOS fines.

From another thread I learnt the tilde (~) is a unix thingy so I'll be limited to unix hosts I guess, but on the other hand all the unix hosts will provide this thing, right?

I think only Cobalt Servers could only provide that feature..

May Be I am wrong, can someone correct me ?

True, the one I have right now, is on a RaQ3.

I wonder if the feature is also in other control pannels, e.g. in PLESK ?

I don't think it's anything specific to RaQ's. That's the default way that Apache handles it.
