View Full Version : Which UK host should i use?
sgwilks 07-09-2001, 09:34 AM Hi i am new to the forum and would like advise about a good UK host to use.I require the following:
cgi-bin
Under £7 a month
minimum 50MB space
Large bandwidth(not excessive)
I also need to purchase a domain name so wish to choose a host that i can buy .com name from for 12 months only, some uk hosts require to buy for minimum of 2 years.
Good email support or forum support
Preferable linux servers.
I am currently with www.uklinux.net using free webspace but requires to use their isp to upload i have found them to be good but i require more space and bandwidth.I heard about Goulnet being good.My site is about downloading mpeg and quicktime movies hence the space and bandwidth.
I would be grateful to hear your comments.
Regards Steve.
Chicken 07-09-2001, 09:50 AM Does the UK host have to have servers, as well as, the company based in the UK? Any reason you want a UK host?
leeacm 07-09-2001, 10:25 AM I host my dedicated server with Xela.ltd.uk (http://www.xela.ltd.uk). The chap who runs this company Alex is a nice admin to host with.
Check out his rates and services, he's worth a look.
I'm not affiliated with this company in anyway, we are not buddies. I just find his service in my opinion much better than even the biggest of Hosting providers and I've had my share of let downs by these bigger names.
:bawling:
sgwilks 07-09-2001, 10:28 AM I am new to paid for hosting as i have previously only used free.I just thought that it would be easier with me living in the UK.Please correct me if i am wrong but does it not matter if i use a USA host, what are the advantages/disadvantages between hosting UK or USA or another country.I guess that there is more competition in the USA hence cheaper prices.Monthly paid would be my choice to try out hosts reliability.

-Edward- 07-09-2001, 10:29 AM http://www.ghoulnet.com/ Very fast uk based company with there own network.
leeacm 07-09-2001, 10:31 AM Go for something in your own country. No problems with time differences, techincal support speak proper English ;p and you can always jump in your car, drive up to their head office and sit on them unti they give you an answer.
sgwilks 07-09-2001, 10:51 AM Yeah www.ghoulnet.com i have heard of them before as being good.So far this company is top of the list for my requirements, but will hang around these forums for more advise, maybe find a better deal.
Steve.
Alan - Vox 07-09-2001, 11:37 AM Kdawebservices.com is uk based, i have heard they are good too, and karl seems to be pretty friendly(I speak to him on icq a lot).
fatcatz 07-09-2001, 12:05 PM http://www.ghoulnet.com/ is good value for the price, and support is good. I paid GBP25 for 50MB (Christmas special) last year but they increased the price this year. However uptime is a problem, take a look at http://uptime.arsdigita.com/uptime/...nitor_id=110061 :bawling: uptime monitor for my site http://www.pocketdownloads.com

Martie 07-09-2001, 12:50 PM Ahhh saw this post at sitepoint as well :D
I think its more of a personal preference.
I have heard good things about www.kdawebservices.com though.
Based in UK, but servers here in the US, I think.
Keep us posted in the forums, and good luck.
Londo 07-09-2001, 01:27 PM If i were you i would try http://www.hosttoday.co.uk
Their severs have good uptime and performance. They have an online chat room which is manned at least 12 hours a day. They are based in the UK so will be in your time zone and they could the cheapest in the whole of the Europe for what they do.
They also do custom packages by request.
Hi, there.
F.Y.I.
As far as I know, Ghoulnet is a kind of cheapest web hosting in U.K.. Previously when I looked for a hosting company, I exchanged some emails with them. The reply was not good. It's slow to received a reply(around 2days) and the information they gave me was not enough to explain the detail. Therefore, I had to sent several emails to them.
sgwilks 07-10-2001, 02:26 AM Goulnet looks good on paper, unfortunately the links sent by Fatcatz did not work, hope its not a problem with Ghoulnet.Hmmm.
-Edward- 07-10-2001, 02:39 AM http://www.ft3.co.uk/ < - hosted by ghoulnet.
GordonH 07-10-2001, 04:44 AM Hello
Hosting in the UK is not necessarily more expensive than the US now. prices are coming down.
We have just installed servers in London and been able to keep the price the same as when we hosted UK accounts in the US.
Its also very cheap to host in Eire and I would think that this will start to become more common as new data centers open up over there.

sgwilks 07-10-2001, 05:09 AM WOW now thats what i call quick loading http://www.ft3.co.uk/ < - hosted by ghoulnet.
Yep Ghoulnet is what its going to be,thanks for the advice folks.
Regards Steve.
sgwilks 07-11-2001, 07:06 PM Fatcatz mentioned that uploading to ghoulnet was a problem, that would be a problem for me as i run a script called image arcadia that enables visitors to upload material to my website and view it instantly, this could be a problem if ghoulnet uploading times are slow. Can anyone therefore recommend a host that uploads fast, currently i use free webspace on uklinux.net and have not had any problems with upload times.Or any other recommendations about ghoulnet would be helpful as i am ready to sign up with them.
Steve.
fatcatz 07-11-2001, 08:32 PM Fatcatz mentioned that uploading to ghoulnet was a problem
I didn't say that  I said uptime was a problem. Unfortunately the link I supplied does not work anymore I deleted the uptime monitor account I had with Arsdigita a fews days ago by mistake!

GordonH 07-12-2001, 05:27 AM Hello
US based servers will be as fast as UK based ones.
The only UK based ones worth using are those in London with a direct connection to LINX, because ones outside of this loop require connections through other networks and might as well be in East coast US.
From here we get <100ms pings to VDI (who we used to use) and Above.net (who we are about to start using)
Pings to our servers at Redbus Interhouse in London are <30ms but to servers in places like Birmingham and manchester are around 80ms
So...... the moral of the story is, host East coast US unless the speed issue is critical, and then you will only see a significant improvement in speed if you host in london on one of the main Linx member data centres.

It was a joke...ha... ha... ha...
-Edward- 07-12-2001, 06:03 AM I find Ghoulnet faster than anyone who goes through linx ..... i.e Netweaver, UK2, Freedom2surf.
