ENSupport 05-30-2003, 10:27 PM Umm if you hosting game you need heavy server, plus 10Mbit lan is a must ;). I dont think anything else you should need... unless you running wireless lan in that case its not really secure :-x
fromage 05-30-2003, 11:11 PM I was at a 350-person lan party a few months back, in 2 weeks, there's another one of 150-people. And on June 20-21st, I'll(atleast I should be) be attending with 5 other clanmates at a 500-man lan tournament, winner gets to go to France to compete against profesional CS, W3, StarCraft, etc. players at ESWorldCup.
Of all the big(ger) lan's I've attended, only one used something other than cisco switches. But for a relatively small lan party, just make sure you have enough power and wont kill the outlets and use a decent switch, say Dlink or SMC or even NetGear would work. I'd suggest staying away from Linksys.
ENSupport 05-30-2003, 11:41 PM Linksys > SMC,NETGEAR
Jeremy 05-31-2003, 12:45 AM OK thx I have a IXE2426 10/100+Gigabit and a Cisco 10000 Series I know its a LITTLE bit to must but my DADs company put it up here so i take it to the MAXX
The Main thing was about Viruses I dont have must Cash to spend So any suggestions
The Sever Is A 500Mhz running Win2k with 512 Ram
It runs VERY Nice!!!
Any Other Suggestions
FW-Mike 05-31-2003, 02:15 AM Make sure everyone comes with a NIC, powerstrip, and has everythign configured before they arrive. This will save so much trouble!
ubergeek22 05-31-2003, 05:55 AM Power sounds like your main concern now. 32 PC's will draw a lot of juice, so if they're all going to be on one floor run extension leads to draw power from the upstairs circuit (assuming your house is like mine, with the different circuits). Make sure you have spare fuses and check no-one does anything stupid like run a microwave, heater and air con (hey, it happens!) off a single extension lead.
El Nino 05-31-2003, 11:52 AM Make sure you have a DHCP server setup too, because statically assigning is a pain. Don't use hubs for that many people, use switches! Also, install all the games on that 500MHz server you have. Running the games in dedicated mode helps a lot. Have all the games and newest patches and mods easily available for everyone to install. Sometimes it's faster to have them burned on a few cds and have the rest grab the files off the server. Also, if you have a UPS, bring it. Power does sound like a problem depending on how big the room is, etc. You could run exension cords w/ power strips to outlets you know are on different circuits
ubergeek22 05-31-2003, 12:24 PM Oh, if your stuck on dialup, make sure you have someone who can bring the latest patches and files, so everyone can join in (setup a mini FTP server if you have the resources). If you can, get the dedicated server version of games (HLDS etc.).

How exactly does one become a 'professional CS et al player'? Surely that is a massive contradiction in terms?
As regards the original issue, depends on how many ports your switch has, its simple enough to daisy chain a few together, 2 x 24 port switches should be no problem whatsoever.
Jeremy 05-31-2003, 02:16 PM Can U DL a Dedicated Server for Warcraft 3 Via LAN I looked 4 hours i only found links to other SERVERs
Yeah 32 Pc at my place Power will be a issue
Thx
O yeah hahaha The Ports theres about 250 of them
Any Others Pls
Should i bother with Quake III (I LOVE THIS GAME)
richy 05-31-2003, 03:39 PM power shouldnt be too much of an issue really, try running gang extension leads from different areas to spread the load over a few different circuits.
fromage 05-31-2003, 03:39 PM For war3, just have someone host a TCP/IP game or something. Quake 3 is among popular lan party games, I only played it once though.
If you don't want to host it at your house, rent space at a local school gymnasium, or in town hall. You can get room for pretty cheap if you live where I do.

Not really. There are professional players of any game. Whether it'll be Dance Dance Revolutions or Tetris, there's always someone to compete for a cash prize on a massive scale.
Jeremy 05-31-2003, 05:21 PM ok thx all 4 all the help so far
