Thought It might be interesting to bring this up again, which is you preffered OS?

My Opinion:

Red Hat no doubt. Been using it on and off for 2 years and now I am running it all the time.

I have a dual boot between XP and Redhat, if I dont log in to XP soon the battery will have gone flat.

Its more stable than Windows and its much more functional as well.

What do you all prefer then????? and give us a reason.

For what?

Server? Workstation? Desktop?

Well for my desktop I'm forced to say Windows...

GTA: Vice City + Linux = no

Suse Linux some of the time. OSX most of the time for Desktop.

Definitely Windows for my desktop. I use XP and never had a crash since it came out. Plus Windows has a lot more programs and games available. I can't see why I would use Linux on my desktop. Don't get me wrong, Linux is my number one choice for servers :)

I have to vote Windows. I don't know *nix enough to use it for my desktop, nor do most of my programs run on *nix. However, when it comes to my site, I perfer it to be on a *nix platform. ;)

Oi.. should have read the thread... Voted Linux, but need to change that on a desktop. Windows XP is far superior in a desktop environment.

i go on linux when i want to learn, or don't have to do anything with photoshop . But i always have to swap out hard drives when i want to work in linux, so i usually just use linux for 8 hours, then after that i'll switch back to windows for a week or so.

This is stupid poll because *nix is crap for desktop (flame away its true) i use *nix strictly on workstation at my house (to connect to other *nix computers and do basic document tasks) and servers. Windows goes on everyday use computers i have.

Everyone who thinks *nix is desktop os should be stabbed in the eye because *nix + X = windows on crack

First let me say that I have a Windows machine AND a Linux machine. I use my Windows machine a little more, just because it's 10x the machine that my linux box is... now let me rip this up here...

Anyone that can't do day to day tasks on the same OS their business is based on should be stabbed in the eye. I didn't even check if you did own a *nix based company but I hope not.

I would agree, that is stupid. Which is why there are alternatives to PS. Gimp isn't Photoshop yet, but it will get there. But hey, doesn't apply here I suck at designs so I don't need either.

Sheesh... Windows users are so insecure :cartman:. Whatever floats your boat, but to me it sounds more like you don't understand the operating system and its purpose as a desktop os. It's got a lot of growing to do, but hey, it's open source.

comphosting, you sig and user title have be stuck on a loop. Can't...break....free...having to type while scrolling up and down.

Anyway, back on topic, Linux works perfectly fine as a desktop. Currently I'm on a laptop running xp (it has no cd drive, nooooo!), but once I get my desktop running again, back to good ol' RH9 with Gnome for me. I use Wine for Photoshop and WineX for games, and it suits all of my needs fine.

Just depends on taste.

Uhm yeah thats what you call WORKstation.... home desktops is something like desing applications/games/e-mail/chat/picture archives/video editing/etc.

hey, I've got a friend who uses exploits in my windows os to mess with me, I can always switch over to linux, and escape his lameness.

Plus, i get a virus every da, in my email, when I am linux, those virii do not affect me.

Linux is alot more convient than windows as well, just about all software out there that is made for linux, is compatible with every dist of linux. With windows, you have to deal with issues like Easy CD Creator 5 not being compatible with Windows XP.

Anyways, i'm realliy tired, i'm gonna stop arguing, buh-bye.

Ha HA what windows exploits he uses on you? Huh? Im my 10 years with windows i havent been infected/exploited if you know how to use windows you wont get anything. I would say that the point of this poll was not to start arguments purely to get feedback on preferences.

Nobody is saying linux can do everything windows can, but then again it's not intended that way (at the moment). Linux is open source and considering its growth and recent events in Munich it shows popularity is growing and its possible that Microsoft may not have the strangle hold on the world it currently has.

If you compare the same elements in Windows and linux then being an avid user of linux the differences are clear.

Linux wins on most all accounts. (my opinion so dont start!)
