One way I want to achieve this is by responding to emails asap. My cell phone providers gives us a special emailaddress that you can email, and it will send a SMS message to my cellphone. Maybe your provider has the same thing? You could consider buying a GSM modem for your computer/server (or just connect a standard phone like a Nokia 6210 or similar). These can send SMS messages directly to the cellphone, and it happens instantly. Usually something like this: 5551212@provider.com. Check their website and I'll bet you'll find something.
