![]() | View Full Version : i don't know much about dedicated servers, a few questions creepcolony 07-08-2001, 11:34 AM how would i know how much mhz/ram my site needs? (SH)Saeed 07-08-2001, 11:41 AM Here are some things that would help.. How many sites are you going to host? How populare are they? Does your site(s) use a lot of scripts (Perl/CGI, PHP, etc)? Are your site(s) database driven? When you have information like that, it will be a lot easier to find out what features your dedicated server needs to have. Dexter 07-08-2001, 10:29 PM Well I assume you mean for your starcraft website. depends on what your hits/bandwidth are but a single site like that anything will do... ;) in general when getting a server you should get atleast: 500mhz 128mb ram etc etc creepcolony 07-09-2001, 06:18 PM are those specs you posted for a server with more than one site? will 300mhz and 32mb ram be ok for one site? Planet Z 07-09-2001, 09:38 PM Originally posted by creepcolony are those specs you posted for a server with more than one site? will 300mhz and 32mb ram be ok for one site? I don't know of any place that would sell a server with specs like that. No one builds machines like that anymore. It would probably cost more to get parts like those than a 600mhz machine w/ 128MB RAM. freakysid 07-09-2001, 10:16 PM Originally posted by Planet Z I don't know of any place that would sell a server with specs like that. Ahem, have you heard of the RAQ3? :) cbaker17 07-09-2001, 11:05 PM ahem have you ever used a raq 3 :) point proven :) Planet Z 07-09-2001, 11:23 PM Thanks cbaker :stickout I don't know about a RaQ3 -- I was talking about building a server like that using normal hardware. creepcolony 07-10-2001, 05:35 PM so would that be ok for just one site? smash 07-10-2001, 05:45 PM Hi, Yes, I would probably be okay, but I guess what others tried to tell you is that the number of sites, may be 1 or 100 doesn't matter much. If you are hosting 1 site but it is called ebay.com, no it won't be enough. If you are hosting 100 small home pages, it will be okay. See what I mean? Thank you, Cedric |
