Hello,
I have setup my raq 4i to be the primary and secondary dns server.
how do I add name based virtual servers. is it as simple as not checking the
"Automatic Reverse
Address Record Generation" when setting up the A record?
could not find any documentation anywhere that explicitly clarifies this for me. The only reference I saw in the RAQ manual was that the name based virtual account is setup in the dns server ...
I am sure it is something simple I am missing

Yes, it is that simple!

If I am not wrong, make sure that you created two accounts for the DNS nameservers , ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com .

I think I have everything right. I extensively researched the topic before I started .... (although that is a famous last word!)
This is what I did
1. Create 2 virtual accounts for ns1.domain.com, ns2.domain.com on two separate IP's
2. registered the two name servers with opensrs (my domain registration company)
ns1.domain.com -> ip1, and ns2.domain.com -> ns2
3. turned on dns on my raq
4. then added both sub domains via the dns interface ... setting ns1 to be primary and ns2 to be secondary
5. I pretty much follow this thread: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=10907&highlight=nameserver+setup+raq
then I added a test domain .. but I have to wait a few days before it all propagates and the nameservers get live.

Wish you all the best then :)

You can run ns1 off the main ip under your www server.
Just create ns2 virtual site and point to a second ip address.
This is how I set up on my system.
--------------
under site management
------>create a virtual site(ns2.yourdomain.com)
------>use a new ip address for your ns2
under contro panel-->network
----->set Primary DNS server address to your cobalt IP
----->set Second DNS server address to the new IP
under contro panel-->services--->DNS-->parameters
----->Add A record for www.yourdomain.com
----->add A record for ns1.yourdomain.com
----->add A record for ns2.yourdomain.com
----->add PTR record for NS1.yourdomain.com
----->add PTR record for NS2.yourdomain.com
----->add PTR record for WWW.yourdomain.com
----->Configure SOA to ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com
Works for me.

I decided not to use the main admin address to be the name server for security reasons. (which as I think of it might not be effective)
but the way I have my raq setup is
ip 1 - admin account
ip 2 - ns1.domain.com
ip 3 - ns2.domain.com
ip 4 - shared hosting ip ie all shared hosting accounts share this IP
the idea was to separate the admin account from the public ns1 domain ... but I wonder if that really helps

There is no security to be gained in doing this, no.
But there is certainly administrative advantages in having each thing neatly grouped on distinct ip-addresses.
