Is anyone using the new Ikonboard? My UBB license will be running out shortly for a personal forum that I run, and I am debating on switching to either VBulletin, YaBB or Ikonboard. I'm leaning to VBulletin, but Ikonboard has all of the features I need. It'd be great if I didn't have to pay, since the board doesn't generate any money. :)

Is anyone using it? Are there lots of bugs? I'm looking for any comments I can get. :)

I'm using ikonboard, the latest version 2.1.9, you can check it out at http://www.creepcolony.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard/ikonboard.cgi

ikonboard and the other perl/flat file based message boards can put quite a strain on your server if the board gets big.

If you're on a budget, check out phpBB (www.phpbb.com). If you're not on a budget, then VBulleting is a great choice.

The standard version is fairly simple and doesn't come with much features (compare to vBulletin) but it you could find surpisingly lots of "hacks" available to make modifications.

Sometimes ago i've installed version 2.1.8, during the first week the board was down two times due to disppearing threads and invalid members files. Posted threads suddenly just disppeared, and I can't even login as the administrator and when i open up the CGI file, it was totally blank. The problem continue to persist no matter how many times i fixed it and eventually i gave up.

It was until release 2.1.9 then i realise it was a bug, which was fixed on this latest version.

Anyway this is still one of the best scripts, i would definately give it another try if there was a chance.

Are you referring to the new version 3.0? If so it is wonderful. It is less server intensive then the other perl boards, it has all the important features that vBulletin has, and its free.

I'm using it on one of my sites. I has been great.

There are a few bugs as it is still in a early beta. Not all the features are finished yet.

Version 3.0 of Ikonboard will have the ability to use flatfile which will be more server intensive OR a FREE MYSQL VERSION which will require much less resources, about the same as VBulletin.

For example:
http://forums.ikonboard.com/ikonboard.cgi

That is V3 Beta in action, the flatfile edition.

http://216.74.123.126/test/cgi/ikonboard.cgi

The link above is the MySQL version of the upcoming IB3, on the EXACT SAME SERVER!

I would wait for IB3, it will save you $160.00 for almost the same thing as VBulletin. Now, dont get me wrong, I love VB, but I think Ib beats it because of the the price.

FYI, Wrestlecar.com currently runs a patched 2.18 version of IB. http://community.wrestlecar.com/

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, I was referring to IB3. I guess I'll wait a few weeks until a more stable version comes out and I'll give it a test drive. Thanks again! :)
