Greets,

I don't know why, but I just counted how many people that have signed up on this board (WHT) but have never posted any messages.
The number I got is about 860 members out of 4,500 have never posted a single message. That is almost 1/5 (20%) of the members!!

Interesting.. You think most of them signed up just so they get cookied so the board remembers their last visit and show them new posts? Or are there other reasons why they signed up or are not posting?

There are always 'lurkers' who hang out at the forum to learn stuff, and don't feel like posting.... Or they're very timid :D

On the other hand you'll get others who sign up for the forum, then find they don't like it, or don't have the required info, or lose their login information, etc. etc. Each forum will always get a few.

I guess I should look at removing inactive members sometime in the near future....

Maybe send 'em an email. Be interesting to see if we got a wave of new blood :D

That'd be way cool, if there was a rush of users.

I visit this forum a few times every day but I usually only post once every few weeks. I'm just here to learn.. :)

I'll bet that out of those 860, the number that are hosts who decided to plug their companies by pretending to be customers, and then reconsidered and decided not to, is....

Learning's my thing too. I am a complete idiot!!

My first computer purchased February this year.

I am so happy :D I found this forum with all these helpfull people!! :D

I am curious though.. . . . . What does the owner/s of the site get out of it? :D

Or; is it possible in this day and age to really get something for nothing?? :cartman:

the owner of the site, Matt Freeman, doesnt gain anything, but he doesnt lose anything either... the site is hosted for free.. the only thing he pays for is the Vbul license :)

Of course he gains stuff. There's been a lot of intelligent discussion that we've all, no doubt, learned from.

Everybody gains:D

AnIdiot, you're not an idiot just because you just started using computers. We all have to start somewhere! I think it's great that you're at least trying to learn, but I don't like people that look down on themselves. If you do it, everyone else will as well.

Hahahah! That is a very smart move. People on this board have no tolerance for that kind of stuff. I think we all have witnessed that :D

Really?? Well I won't tell you how old I am or anything.
It's not for this page. But it's in my profile.
As for being an idiot. . . . .I am not; in the sense of being stupid or foolish (although some may argue;) )
But, I am, in the sense of being ignorant.
I know very little about this whole www thing:eek:

That's why I came here. To observe. To learn. And to grow.:cartman:

We should never quit learning:D

I always find these comments interesting.

Why do you care if people are members and do not post? What's wrong with read only members?

I'd be interested in being able to send email to members who have not visited in the last 6 months, but I don't think I'd just kick them off the board if they have not posted. Seems a little extreme for a community.

witt, BC wasn't taking about members who don't visit the forum. We can also tell the last time they visited. If they have no posts, only visited once and that was the last time they came, I think it is safe to free up the user names.

Always fun to shoot 'em an email to see if they just never got auth. :( , or forgot about us :bawling: or

I am one that does not post very often, it is not that I no longer am interested in this forum, it is that I mostly read to learn.. If by chance I have something to say then I will.. I guess at my rate of post, it will take about another two years to reach 500;)

Many people on internet are used to open accounts.

They may think:
"...maybe I will need it somewhere along my surfing... so why not prevent that. "

Maybe we are too used to opening accounts. Who knows?

Maybe.. Only the mods can tell us how many of them still visit this board. It would be interesting to know. :D

Except perhaps to reply to this... seeing your post just reminded me.

Working in a second hand computer shop 4-5 years ago I once sold an 87 year old a pc to run a satellite tracking program so he could work out which satellite to use to talk to his mate in Australia over HAM radio. (Was a late 486, some git in a showroom tried to sell him a £2000 PC he couldn't really afford or need)

Good luck to them!

I'd be willing to bet a bunch of these people simply changed usernames. I changed mine at around 61 posts, so if Chicken ever wants to tack them onto my current count i'd be much obliged! . :D

Must be a bit hard to commute mainland/hawaii

"git" is a general term, politer word than alternatives.
Could mean unscrupulous salesperson, person who cuts you up on the road, etc. Sometimes used in envious overtones (person whose luck you envy) but definately not in this reference :)

English to American Dictionary > G (http://english2american.com/dictionary/g.html#git)

Yikes, I just noticed I became a WHT junkie! :D

Maybe there's a need to motivate these peoples to start posting? How about a promoting like.. "10 Additional Posts Free For Your Very First Post, That's 11 Posts For Your Very First!" :D

I still don't understand the problem here. I for one don't want my board filling up with junk posts just so people can raise their message count - or just so they have a post to their credit.

I have 250 registered members. 150 have posted. I get 22000 forum page views a week. I usually have 2-3 registered members online at a time, and 20-30 guests. That's OK with me. I have no problems with that whatsoever.

My registered members who don't post feel more like a part of the community than those who just view as a guest. That's OK with me too.

Is this just a makework exercise or is there some problem I don't understand.

I think it's just a light hearted prance into the realm of thinking aloud. Surprising a few people, perhaps, but I don't think anyone seriously thinks there's anything wrong with it.

I agree. I don't think anyone thinks there is anything wrog with this. I started this thread simply because I thought it was interesting and thought maybe others would like to know about it. It's just General Conversations.. Nothing more, nothing less..
