Hey all
I currently have a pretty crappy comp.

166mhz
10 gig hd (ide)
1 gig hd ( ide)
64 sd ram pc 100
4 mb vid card
16 bit sound card
dlink nic card

i'm thinking about getting more ram
i have my p166mhz, with 64 sd ram pc 100.
So i mean. If i go get a AZEN 256MB, 168 PIN, PC133, SDRAM DIMM and take out my 64, would my comp run better? Would it only run at 66 instead of pc133? <- even if that happens, would my comp run better? being a 166

Or should i go get a 128?
Would my comp run faster?

If you can afford it, why not just buy a new computer? You can get a pretty good one for much under 1000. Check pcconnection.com(referbished desktops) or ebay.

Hi node9

You say you have '64 sd ram pc 100' so your ram is running at 100MHz, you should get a 128MB pc 100 as well (rather than pc 133). You probably will notice some difference, speed-wise, and you will be able to have more applications running at once. You probably won't have to take the 64MB ram module out though (unless you have a laptop -- I had to do this for one of mine). Most desktops have more than one slot for ram, so you should just be able to add a 128MB ram module which would give you 192MB total.

Speed-wise, you will most likely notice a difference in performance, but there are other considerations that also affect performance -- the cpu speed (166MHz), the bus speed etc. Still, I've upgraded my ram and not regretted it. You can get ram pretty cheap these days and it will make a difference, but if you really need more speed, JohnB's suggestion is the way to go.

I doubt that a computer with a cpu running at 166mhz is using PC100 RAM at 100mhz. It is probably using it at 66mhz at the most. The one computer I have that is that old doesn't even use sdram. If you want to add RAM, make sure that what you're getting will work with your machine. Buying PC133 would provide no benefit over pc100 on a machine that doesn't support a 133mhz front side bus, and that would probably include every p166 system ever built. Simply adding more of the correct type of RAM would probably yield some performance improvement.

If you're not completely sure what type of RAM your machine needs, I would take a look at www.crucial.com. They have a pretty nice lookup feature that includes as many name-brand systems as any I've seen, as well as many common motherboards that you might find in a home-built system.

166 Mhz must be (the original) Pentium ... so, yes, the FSB must be 66 with 2.5 multiplier .... so your PC133 will still be run at 66Mhz ... I would suggest you to get a new CPU (PIII), new M/B and new memory ... you can well do this under $200 (US$ that is) .... :)

cheers,
