I'm curious to know the percentage of people here which use website monitoring tools... :)
If you want, post the name(s) of the service(s) you use... personally I use ServerRat (it seems dead to me, anyway), InternetSeer, QWKMON and NetMonitor365, all in the free version.

I use EasyMonitor. The same company also offers ExpertMonitor which is a pay service with more options.

Simply pinging the server doesn't mean that your website is up and running. There are many cases the server responds to the ping but your site will never load. I am using IP-Check (i believe it's called that way, but i am not shure). With this software you can actually check the websites by loading a page and you can even adjust it to watch for included code in the source. ;)
PS: It's oly for Win boxes i think.

Another very good tool is servers alive - its free :D and you can get it from www.download.com
