Any opinions if it's worth the money to take the Red Hat Certified Engineer test? Will it really do you any good?

It might do some good, for your career. As for knowledge, any certification for system, network, programming and/or other type of computer related field are usually worthless and only mean you know basic things. Mind you, this is better than nothing, because anyone can claim about anything, but for those many clueless IT company's that are looking to hire, they will probably want to see some degree or certification of some sort, even if it only means you know basic things.

If you already know all the aspects that such a cetification can prove, it might depend on your personal desire, career desires or mainly if it costs anything (and if so, how much) to take the test to prove you know these basic things. It might not be worth the time or money. This is all, after all these years, still pretty new and people are more likely ot care about your actual knowledge, comprehension and capabilities, than a certification or degree showing you know basic things. This goes for about anything. Still, the lack of such a thing might hold you back from working for certain company's.

However, my opinion of company's that care more about a piece of paper proving you know basic things over proving by doing, references and examples and so much more showing you know that much and more, are the type of company's I personally wouldn't bother wworking for, because they don't understand or appreciate your talents enough to truly value you and what you can contribute.

and second, i agree on what you say, some companies that dont know any better simply want a degree or certificate.

Although if you find a company more interested in your personal skills rather than whats on paper then you will hold a much better position within the company.
