I know this is a very stupid question.

Example i have Pro_Ftpd version 1 on my server ... and then the new patch Pro_Ftpd version 3 is out ...

how do i patch it in redhat?

When you are using redhat you can just upgrade using the RPM file.

RPMs may not be released all the time the same time it is out. But if it is, use the rpm. It is safer. If not, you just have to recompile it. But make sure you are using the right paths and such.
