Hi,

quick question, I just installed 7.3 on a server and i want to use the up2date command. I haven't installed apache or anything on it jsut yet i need to have gcc the first thing to be installed would the up2date command be able to do this for me? at least put the rpm there and then i can go from there?

Basically what i want to do is install php, mysql, perl, FP, apache and some other things on this server. Basically just for my domain name so i can learn. I know a dns server is involved and some other things that will be taken care of by someone else. Does anyone also know a great manual to go by for install all of this. I know you can look at php.net and mysql.org and apache.org does anyone know any like other how to or something ot that nature.

Yall are always great in helping people out i do appreciate it.

Jason

Why didn't you select the packages when you installed Redhat? I would go back and reinstall it and install all the packages you want when you're installing, including RHN (up2date). Then once your system is installed you can run up2date from the shell or X, and update all your packages. Much easier to do it that way, and it seems like you have local access.

up2date --install gcc

That should work

If not try apt

I wish redhat had something like urpmi as Mandrake does.

Unless I am mistaken, how does one install something in redhat, from shell ( no X ), by simple name?

In mandrake, to install apache from CD was:

urpmi apache

What is the RH equiv?

I didnt think there was one.

I do have local access. Though i kinda want to learn say put in this room do everything from shell, basically telling DC to do a miniminal install of RH with networking. Iam still trying to learn this stuff. But i do appreciate yalls input :)

If they aren't already installed, download and install the rhn and up2date rpm's then you can register and use that to install rpms for you

I think redhat have just stopped supporting 7.3 . They won't update its packages, so up2date will get you to the latest 7.3 packages now but won't do much after that.

Consider reinstalling with 8.0

Not entirely certain about this because I cannot find the email message they sent.

That's strange. I used it to update some servers.. and I also updated redhat7.2 servers fine too.
