View Full Version : Who is the BEST registrar???
SoftWareRevue 07-04-2001, 10:34 PM Who is the absolute, best, undisputable domain name registrar???
Or is that indisputable??
Oh. . . . .I USED to have a dictionary around here SOMEwhere:rolleyes:
Actually, I have quite a few registered with GoDaddy.
And, although I have been satisfied with their service; I have heard that there are others better.
Just looking for some input on whether I should stay with GoDaddy; or begin registering somewhere else:cool:
ecomiscool.com 07-04-2001, 11:00 PM We used BulkRegister (http://bulkregister.com) and we never wanted go anywhere else. :)
So I don't have much experience with others. But I've heard good about enom.com, dotster and 000domains.com on this forum
SECUREDNETWORKS 07-04-2001, 11:34 PM We have used registerclub.com for a while now they have been great, the one thing I like about them is they aren't that big of a company so when ever you dial their toll free number they are always there.
Duster 07-05-2001, 12:01 AM It's indisputable and there is none. Some people will prefer the lowest price, some will prefer convenience and service. As with choosing a host, there is no one best solution for everyone.
alpha 07-05-2001, 12:02 AM i think 000domains.com is #1 domain registrar... ive never had them register a domain for me but I've contacted their support with very quick response.
Im currently using stargateinc.com, they are very cheap and their support has been great also :)
g'luck
Furton 07-05-2001, 08:24 AM I personnally think www.dotster.com is the best, the site is always up and buying a domain (at a good price) is very easy.
dotcomguy 07-05-2001, 12:23 PM registerclub.com, and 00domains.com are not Registrars. They are resellers for registrars. (I believe they both are resellers for OpenSRS, I know 000domains is, not 100% about registerclub).
Here's a lits of "Accredited" registrars:
http://www.icann.org/registrars/accredited-list.html
If a company you are looking at isn't on this list, they are most likely a reseller for someone who is on this list. Nothing wrong with that route, but I would suggest some further investigation if you do decide to go this way. I've heard some nasty stories about resellers shutting down, and you no longer have access to your domains. (A good Registrar wouldn't let that happen though). Of course, this isn't nearly as bad as your Registrar shutting down!
Cheers, and happy hunting!
R&K Global Business Services, Inc. d/b/a 000Domains.com (United States) is on the list of Accredited Registrars
I'm not sure but I think that they are accredited by :puke:ICANN but they continue to resell for OpenSRS
dotcomguy 07-05-2001, 01:01 PM Yes, I stand corrected. But, they are only operating as a reseller for OpenSRS.
UmBillyCord 07-05-2001, 01:05 PM I think the best way to pick a Registrar is by who has the best logo. www.domainpeople.com has the coolest logo, so pick them. :D

They aren't resellers. They are RSPs (Registered Service Providers). You can't register directly with Open SRS (unless you become an RSP).

OpenSRS can give it whatever terms it likes....
OpenSRS is an ICANN Accredited REGISTRAR - they are bound by the same agreement that we are, or Dotster or Register.com, or Network Solutions is. Their term for a "Reseller" happens to be "RSP (Registered Service Provider)". I suppose we could call our resellers (or partners as they are also called) "DAS (Domain Acquisition Specialists)".
Cheers.:D
(time to steer this ship back to where it started...who is the best registrar?)
markblair 07-05-2001, 01:52 PM I personally use and like Dotster but have also seen posts with tons of praise for eNom, GoDaddy, 000Domains, etc. Like mentioned before, it all depends on if you want the lowest price or someone that just provided the best services even if they are a few bucks more than others.
Only one warning, stay away from Network Solutions. They are a nightmare to deal with, unless you like sending e-mail forms to them to modify anything.

It's not a matter of terminology. the RSPs don't resell anything.
Legitimate uses of the term reseller are such as when a hosting company, where anyone can open an account, also has a plan where customers can resell the spac ein their accounts or new accoutns and bring in their own customers, getting a percentage or flat rate. Those are genuine resellers.
RSPs are no more resellers than hosting companies who have their servers at Alabanza or any of the NOCs who only deal in dedicated servers and not shared server hosting.

Sure. You can look at it that way. However, it boils down to this....
OpenSRS is an ICANN Accredited registrar allowed to register domain names with Internic/Network Solutions/Verisign (whatever they are calling the Registry now....). An OpenSRS RSP is allowed to register domains WITH OpenSRS - not the Registry. So whether you want to call them a reseller, a partner, a Registered Service Provider, or a Domain Acquisition Specialist - it doesn't matter. They are feeding domain registrations to OpenSRS, who in turn registers the domain with the Registry - no different than the partners of Domain People are feeding domain registrations to us and we are registering with the Registry (all of which, on both sides of this example, is automated and done in real time).
By the way, who are these RSP's "Registered" with? OpenSRS? If so, would you be more comfortable dealing with one of our partners if we said they were an RSP's?
I'm not arguing the fact that OpenSRS has a good system in place - it is. All I'm saying is that there is terminology within this business that most people seem to have confused (Registry and Registrar being the big one - then of course, the term Transfer is another one). When it comes down to the relationship between the Registrar (Domain People, OpenSRS, Register.com, INWW, etc.) and their partners/resellers/RSP's, there are various terms that can be used (as I just did).
My initial point was that people need to be aware of the differences, and should do their homework before making a snap decision. Sure, reviewing these boards is an excellent place to start, in fact, it is an excellent place to go after you have narrowed it down to a few you think meet your requirements - the posts here could be a definite benefit when making a final decision.
Cheers!
nelson 07-05-2001, 04:50 PM I prefer either http://dotster.com or http://itsyourdomain.com. I currently use both.
Dogma 07-05-2001, 04:52 PM Not this debate again.....
Well, I'll add to it I guess. I love www.stargateinc.com . They have great prices and fast service (5 minute wait time max. on the phone) very good!
SoftWareRevue 07-05-2001, 04:55 PM ummm. . . .
So who's the best registrar??
Maybe take it from an idiot's (likes to have his hand held)
perspective, wanting to spend less money than most.
hmm :eek2: :eek2:

Depends upon the criteria you use to qualify as best.
For example, for some domains, I like register.com -- super reliable DNS, the ability to add MX, A, CNAME and SOA records for my domains, plus some other redirection services and the like. On the other hand, register.com is $35 per domain per year (unless you transfer your domain to another registrar, then they offer you a $12 per year deal).
Then there is 000domains.com. I'm in the process of trying them out, combined with zoneedit.com for my DNS servers. So far, everything is looking good. And the price is very good as well.
So it depends upon what you're looking for.
creepcolony 07-05-2001, 06:46 PM i registered my domain at tera-byte.com it's a snap to update name servers and stuff
Aloha
have about 25 domains with dotster adn love em
greeat service easy to use
downside is that there are no dns controls besides the basic nameserver pointing
so also going to look at
www.stargateinc.com
