I'm a newbie looking into hosting options and I see subdomains thrown around a lot...what exactly does that mean?

Subdomains help you organize different areas of your site and are usually setup as subdomain.yourdomain.com. Say you had a forums for your site you could setup forums.yourdomain.com.

Hope this helps.

A sub domain is an addon to your main domain. For instance you have http://www.yourdomain.com a sub domain would be http://username.yourdomain.com or http://secure.yourdomain.com etc.

Oki, yes that helps...I thought it was that and felt stupid asking...but hey that's how we all learn.

I was actually checking out your company yesterday...You have pretty reasonable prices, but I couldn't find a "learn more" portion to your website to learn more about the features you offer and whatnot.

Would you mind PM'ing me so I can ask some more questions?

No question is a stupid question, but for the one you don't ask.

See this thread regarding what a subdomain actually is. As opposed to how it's commonly used on wht:

We use "sub-domain" on our web site, because it is the most common terminology for 3rd-level domain.

I guess you have to look at it the same way most people refer to a "hacker", which is actually not a hacker at all.

subdomain is just another level.

sub.domain.com - sub is a subdomain of domain.com.

domain.com - domain is a subdomain of com.

Exactly, it is a third level domain, or sub domain. It's not a hostname. It seems most people on WHT use it to mean additional hostnames under their domain name.
