View Full Version : How much Rama-lama-ding-dong?
Chicken 08-05-2000, 03:56 PM Hmmm ok, I currently run a RaQ3 with the amount of ram it came with (64MB), and will be upgrading it (before it gets too busy and I have to take it off line), so the question is, how much is enough?
I'd like the option to run some forums, doubt they will ever get too big, but then again who knows. Seems I should have more ram to even consider this, so is 256 enough or should I bump it up to 512? Now I know it will be complete overkill either way at this moment, but I am doing this for the future.
I don't know...
webfors 08-05-2000, 04:15 PM Hey Chicken,
I think the raq3 has 3 dimm slots, therefore I would add a 256 meg module since you would only be left with one extra slot for future upgrade, unless you get rid of the 64 meg module.
I have 128 megs on my server right now and I will be upgrading to 256 in the next month. I really don't need it now, but like you said, it's better to be prepared for the future.
I don't think there is any need to go straight to 512 meg right now, especially with the price of ram. Unless of course you want to save money on the installation, then by all means go to 512 right away and pay for one install fee. I'm not sure what tera-byte charges for hardware installation. You might want to check this out first before deciding. If it's expensive, say $100 or more, then install it all now and save yourself the money of the future installation fee of another ram module.
Later :)

MikeA 08-05-2000, 08:32 PM Hey Chicken,
When I had my RaQ, I had 256 MB of RAM and after about 6 months, we upgraded to 512 MB. I would suggest the higher amount, if you can afford it. Plan for the future, not for today.

Annette 08-05-2000, 08:42 PM The more RAM you get today, the better off you'll be tomorrow. It's one less thing to worry about during times of expansion.

Chicken 08-05-2000, 11:32 PM Thanks guys, I think due to the fact that I don't want to take the server offline in the future, I am just going to go full metal jacket and be done with it. I am also throwing in another HD that is (again) overkill for what I need now, but the cost of a 20 Gig and a 10 Gig drive isn't all that much.
My biggest problems now will be: I'll have too much space and too much ram. I like those sort of problems. :)
I really appreciate the advice, as it *is* going to cost me over $800 for everything. Thank you!
Fiber 08-06-2000, 03:33 AM Are you going to want some sites on that server then?

Chicken 08-06-2000, 10:46 AM Correct. Currently, it has some sites on there for testing purposes, as well as, a few clients' sites. I am not sure what they will be doing so I figured now is the time to upgrade.
Coreace 08-07-2000, 01:28 PM Buy as much memory as you can afford. It is no such thing as "too much" memory. Get Steve to send you the 64MB, Then upgrade to 512RAM. While you are at it, throw in a new HDD and use your old as a 2nd. I know... expensive but worth every cent. If you upgrade several times add the overall cost: server down, Steve charging fee's etc. And you end up paying more...
Or... upgrade to 256RAM then get a 2nd server to add more customers.

Chicken 08-07-2000, 07:01 PM That is what I am doing. I was kinda joking about the "too much ram" thing... :)
How many clients do you folks think a RAQ with only 64 megs can handle? Lets say small sites, no intensive CGI's.
Chicken 08-08-2000, 09:44 PM Plenty. Hard to say how much a server can handle (really depends on the sites of course), but the main drawback to the RaQ's is the processor. You can't jam 500 sites on it, no matter what the ram. This is what I think, not what I know first hand from trying it.
Most people limit it to somewhere between 80-150 sites and I would have at least 128MB of ram to do that (more the better as has been said before).
When it starts to hurt, upgrade it :)
