View Full Version : Usa
davidb 07-04-2001, 02:51 PM My homepage is set to netscape, because I dont like to change it. Everyday they have polls. Today was rateing the USA. F was the highest and A was the lowest. Is it just me or do many people really have a problem with america today? I went to the message board that went with that, and people were just complaining and blaming president Bush. What I kinda want to know from everyone is what they think, is that poll right? I know a lot of people run buissness's here so that should add to your thoughts. I am pretty happy here, I would never want to move to another country. What do you think.
I also wanted to add on what you think of courts. On the board there were people saying courts were unfair screwing people over, blah blah blah. You tell that to the person who had coffee spilled on them and they won millions.
qslack 07-04-2001, 03:09 PM My problem with the US is that while it was originally "for the people, by the people, of the people", it's not that way anymore.
The government seems to yield to corporate interests. For example, Clinton extended the copyright length when Disney's (who also contributed a lot of money to him) copyrights on characters such as Mickey Mouse were running out. Also, The Digital Millenium Copyright Act is clearly in the interest of corporations and no one else. It makes it possible for pieces of work to stay copyrighted for eternity, something explicitly mentioned as bad in our constitution.
My main complaint is just that the government, who is supposed to protect our individual rights, is instead helping the large, international corporations get even larger.
davidb 07-04-2001, 03:23 PM Well I know this is harder then I make is sound, acually a lot harder, but with stuff like this, why not try to support government officials who do have the people in their best interest. I do agree that is unfair though.

Perhaps you could point out where it says that?

Might that not be the kind of thing they're talking about? Many people think that court decisions like that are unfair, and that the losers in such cases have been "screwed over."
That shouldn't be taken to mean that I hold that opinion about the particular case in question, just making the point that in one sentence you seem to be criticizing those who criticize the courts, while doing so yourself!
Voodoo Web 07-04-2001, 03:57 PM No, No, the USA is top, for daily jokes ;-)
davidb 07-04-2001, 04:06 PM In that meaning I ment people vs companies, like they said that the people part was getting screwed.
Also the US are the best for jokes I have to agree with that, how the Simpsons make fun of it is great.
Also anyone watch dennis miller live, he talks about the government and america a lot.
Dogma 07-04-2001, 04:08 PM Bush is really playing to corp. interests!!

Dogma 07-05-2001, 12:17 AM true, true, true. It's kinda funny. Every pres. elected on a year ending in '00 has never completed their term......lets keep the trend alive :D
Its more congress's fault than the president, after all the president has to have everything approved. Congress is run by large corporations who lobby the members, such as the RIAA, tobacco companies, etc. People are just so greedy.

What about the oil companies? Bush rejected all of the pollution treaties and bills the US was working on, just so the main donor to his party this year would be happy.
I don't think that oil companies should be allowed to drill in Alaska (or any other place as breathtaking). You'll agree with me if you've ever been there. There are just so many natural wonders that only someone working in the best interests of corporations would give anyone the right to destroy that land.
Scott 07-05-2001, 05:26 AM I don't consider myself a Democrat, Republican or even an Independent, I am an American citizen and I feel that the Bush admin. is setting this country back to the wonderful Ronnie era and making things tough for our future and for future generations like your children and their children. It's sad to see only the rich getting richer, the divide between the haves and the have not's getting larger, and the earth's resources and ecology raped. We need a leader that can see well beyond his/her own lifespan and who isn't driven by greed.
Would I leave the United States? Being single with no family, I'm free to travel. I guess it depends on the next couple of President's and how out of control the circus has become by then
Don't even ask what I think about the US court system

Only if there is any economical interest. Just sight all the people killed in Uganda or in poor african countrys.
Or do you really believe that the War in Kuwait/Iraq was against Saddam?

I think you need to recheck that historical fact. Especially the 1980 election. Ronald Reagan was elected that year. He not only finished that term, but finished another. He was, however, the first president elected in a 00 year that finished his term.
