View Full Version : Down since 12 hours...what we do?
Nymix-CB 05-19-2003, 04:19 PM Hi,
Seems like the Cisco router which I'm on just lost contact with Earth...12 hours consecutive downtime with no email access! They said they are working on this but hey, it's been 12 hours! Do something and shut up!
Customers are calling to ask what is happening...what to do?
Ask for a month free at the datacenter? (Only happening to 2 servers)
2 times in 2 month they do that..
I'm gonna issue 1 month free to all customers but I'd like to have a month free from my DC...
All comments are good...tx
Which datacenter are you in?

SchultzNY 05-19-2003, 04:56 PM A lot of places have clauses saying they arent responsible for downtimes of this sort and wont issue refunds. id look into it if i were you.
Nymix-CB 05-19-2003, 05:05 PM Yeah I'm gonna read the contract, but they say 100% uptime on their website...
SchultzNY 05-19-2003, 05:33 PM 100% uptime is so difficult to obtain....
We should all get on our knees and pray to the server gods to allow us to stay in business on a day to day basis.
Them and the sys admins.

Most of the time the 100% has nothing to do with the server. It is the connectivity that is gauranteed. The server could be spewing lots of little nothings...all over the web. But the datacenter can be up and running.

AH-Tina 05-19-2003, 05:58 PM Call them and tell them your situation. Ask them what they are willing to do to keep you a happy customer.

Nymix-CB 05-19-2003, 06:37 PM @AffordableHost => This is what I'm gonna do when everything will be up. I'm just hoping to be online as soon as possible. Right now I'm offering 1 month free to every customer.
jay23 05-19-2003, 06:55 PM Peer 1 advertise as 100% uptime and because of that their bandwidth prices are very high, but still I have few servers in their Toronto data center so this is a big supprise for me. In fact I even went and saw that they had 2 CISCO GSR's. Anyway you may want to send an email to Mark Teolis <mteolis@peer1.net> who is the CTO for Peer1.
Nymix-CB 05-19-2003, 08:54 PM Still down, seems like the router doesn't want to give my server his IP range.
Hope to get news soon!
SchultzNY 05-19-2003, 09:14 PM Badger them until u get a real tech on the phone.
If all else fails, baseball bat to the knees.
If I was happy with my datacenter id be in more of a position to talk, but Im getting rather tired of them sooo...yeah.
Angel78 05-20-2003, 04:47 AM auch, you are still down ( 7 hrs from last post ), they should issue a refund ( free month or RAM or HD upgrade )
Nymix-CB 05-20-2003, 06:07 AM It's colocation and it's now been 24 hours and I'm STILL down...I contact them every hour they said they are working on it...DAMN this is ruining my business!
Nymix-CB 05-20-2003, 06:25 AM Seems like there is a good news, he's giving me a month free...
alapo 05-20-2003, 06:48 AM Heh... That sounds horrible... Just remember, most places that guarantee 100% uptime, are more like 100% *
Its been down for over 24H and thats all you're gonna get?
Should get more than that.....ask for 2 months
SchultzNY 05-20-2003, 07:05 AM Is he still down? I fell asleep.
Alfa is right, 2 months bare minimum to stick with this place.
A month free? Is that really going to help? or do you have to pass some of that back down to your clients?
As they are also down and could look to you for free services in retribution as well.

They may "say" it but do you have a contract, SLA or Guarantee?
A lot of webhosts have nice images saying "99.9% uptime" but dont show any sort of terms on the site to back that up.
Nymix-CB 05-20-2003, 03:19 PM Finally it's up, they said the problem was:
-Broken network cable
-Misconfigured router
-Misconfigured DNS server (Well...worked for 2 months)
Anyway now it's up, gonna have news about money they are gonna give me.
Thanks!
turboweb 05-20-2003, 03:23 PM that kind of outage sounds like your provider didn't pay there bills.
Even lin cuts, router replacements/switch replacements wouldn't last that long!
Nymix-CB 05-20-2003, 03:26 PM I don't think Peer1 didn't paid their bills :)
SchultzNY 05-20-2003, 03:31 PM Id give users a month free for their troubles... Kind of like saying "thank you for your support on this issue"
Nymix-CB 05-20-2003, 03:44 PM This is exactly what I done...think they will be happy.
MarcD 05-20-2003, 03:48 PM If it is only effecting 2 servers, Why dont the simply move you over to another rack. ?>???
Why the long wait trying to fix that port. just move you over. Cant tell me that they dont have any more available
also ask for confirmation what bay and panel you are on.
psalicrup 05-20-2003, 04:43 PM I thought peer1 was top choice =/
Nymix-CB 05-20-2003, 05:36 PM Yeah actually it is, they called me about 1 hour ago excusing themself and offering me 3 months free :)
I just have to pay the GB used per month...woa that's cool!
We are in Peer1 Montreal, and didn't experience or hear about any of this. In my opinion they are worth every dollar.
They have only failed us once since October 2002 (which is when we moved in). The only downtime we have had from them was for about 45 min due to some electricity issues in January.
Edit:
Your website seems to be hosted with a company who uses Peer1 , are you sure it wasn't their problem and not Peer1's ?
Sheps 05-20-2003, 08:12 PM Hope everything is working good for you now, Ultimate. I am in Northern Ontario, the closest Colo for me would possible be Winnipeg(Manitoba) or Thunder Bay. Beyond that, it would be Toronto, which IMO wouldn't be bad, since I have family down that way and it is a excuse to go see them.
"My, uh, server is b0rked" :D
But, I am renting right now, so...
