A friend has a domain which expired in April this year.
Their registrar is Network Solutions.
Now that the domain has expired (and is on hold), how can I transfer it across to my preferred registrar (Stargate)?
Or can I just get NS to delete the domain immediately so that I can re-register it as normal?
Otherwise I'll just have to wait for the dreaded 'drop'!

You'd probably need to get the name deleted. I'm pretty sure you can't transfer an expired domain. I'd check with your new registrar and see what advice/assistance they can give you. Obviously, it's to their benefit to help you transfer the domain.

Ha! Good luck getting NSI to do that, or anything else, immediately.
And remember, if it's a name that might be in demand, that if you do get them to delete it anybody can register it. You could lose it.
I dislike Network Solutions as much as anyone does, but the safest way to do this is probably to renew the domain with them, and then transfer it. You'd lose the $25 or so difference between what you'd have to pay them for a year and what you'd have paid elsewhere, but you would minimize the potential for glitches.

You can't transfer an expired domain. Jay gave the best way to do it, renew it if possible and then transfer it.

NS sucks,
Pay the $35.00 wait 10 months then transfer. There is no other option that I have found. I have tried to change admin contact on one name for six months so that I could transfer it "I own the damn name" . Network solutions keeps refusing because I don't have a letter head logo....... F them! If I lose it I will tell you about the court proceedings!
I had one domain I let expire and wait until it was dropped by NetSol. When it was finally dropped (3 months or so after it expired) I was able to register it with another registrar. But it was too risky and do it only if you are 1) willing to lose the domain and 2) you are willing not to use the domain for sometime, maybe for about two weeks. This is the period between the time when NetSol deletes the record in their database at which time it is no longer available by DNS request and when it is finally offered back to the public.
As has been suggested the only practical solution is to renew the domain with NetSol and transfer it to another registrar sometime later.

I know for example Joker.com refuses to transfer not only expired domains but also domains which will expire in less than 2 weeks.

Letter head logo can be ANYTHING - make some up in Word, if you have to.
We have had much success in getting domains rescued and control back to the rightful owners.
You can't, however, transfer an expired domain until it's released.
