View Full Version : I am so stinkin' confused...new domains

I keep reading all of these articles and it is really confusing me.

When the new domains come out, how in the world are they being doled out, do we know yet?

There are a couple of domains that I would like to try and get but should I be signing up now to get into some kind of lottery? What is the waiting period where copyrighted companies can try and dispute it?

What if you want to register your name but it's the name of some company. I just want to make sure I am standing in the right line, not the farm equipment line at the DMV.

Thanks

Check out this link at Dotster. It explains the .biz TLD. You pretty much bid on the domain you want. The more applications for the domain you enter the better chance you have of the .Biz people letting you register it.

Don't worry, I work in the business and I too am confused!

Here's what we know so far:

.info:
Sunrise Period (for trademark domains) = July 25th - Aug. 27
Pre-registration processing (for non-trademarked domains; submissions may be made now) = Sept 12 - 19
Live (exactly what it means) = Sept 19

.biz:
IPClaim (for trademark domains) = Now - Aug 6
Name Application (pre-reg processing) June 25 - Aug 25
Live = Oct 1

(Yup, I know that probably doesn't help much ;) )

As for which Registrar to use, that is up to you. Most are charging a small pre-reg fee, and allowing mutliple submissions of the same name. Some, like Dotster, are auctioning the space in their pre-reg database - so if you're willing to pay a whole swack of money, go that route. If you want a .biz, and your name is a trademark you will pay at least $90 for the IP claim, then the pre-reg fee, plus the registration fee if succesful - this is pretty much standard at all Registrars.

Again, I'm sure this doesn't help a whole lot. Since most of the Registrars are confused as to how all this works, I certainly don't expect the public to have it figured out.

Anyhow, have a great day. :D

So if I want to get a jump start on registering a .info domain without paying "a whole swack of money" where would I go?

Well, you can check us out (is that considered self promotion?), or go to www.icann.org/registrars/accredited-list.html

I'm not certain that all the registrars are taking .info/.biz registrations, but you may be able to find out exactly who is by going to the registry sites:

.info: www.afilias.info
.biz: www.neulevel.biz

Cheers!

What are the cost differences and benefits of using your service over Dotsters to pre-register .info domains?

Can you please describe the process you use to submit my request to Afilias? Why wouldnt I just go straight to Afilias to do this?

Thanks

Information regarding our processes can be found here:
http://www.domainpeople.com/new-tld.cfm

You can't go straight to Afilias because they are the registry. Just like you can't register your dot-com's at Verisign/Internic/NSIRegistry (or whatever name they have for the registry this week).

As taken from your site:

"Your submitted order will be placed in a queue for processing through a randomized process at the Registries. "

What regestries?

"There will be a $5 non refundable pre-registration fee for each domain that you submit"

So let me see if I have this right..
Dotster charges $30 for a "bid" on a .info domain which will give me 1 submission but I can make multiple submissions for the same domain with your service for $5 a piece??

Please clarify, thanks

www.afilias.info for ".info"
and
www.neulevel.biz for ".biz".

Exactly. Neither one will guarantee you the registration though. Plus you will need to pay the registration fee with us (I think that may be included in the Dotster price - not sure), and if we're talking about a trademark domain for ".biz" there is a $90 IP claim as well...... (Please keep in mind that I am quoting retail rates - contact me outside of the forum if you want to know reseller/bulk rates.)

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying our way is better or worse than any other Registrars'. You need to decide for yourself which registrar is best suited to meet your requirements for domain name registration and management. I don't know that there is an easy solution to the problem of registering domains in the new TLD spaces - there probably isn't any one easy solution - someone will always have a problem with whatever process is decided upon. Although, a start might have been to make one process "uniform" across all registrars.......
